00.00 Retrospective Time I am not tired. I watch a little of the Red Carpet for the Golden Globes.
00.15 I am not in the mood to do anything and this includes sleep. I play some games against the computer. I have failed again at chess after getting a run of over 50 games and have had similar problems of good runs and making a mistake or find a problem which I am unable to resolve with all the other games with one magnificent exception -Free Cell moving from 101 to 202 games successfully. ( Insert two years later I have achieved a run of over 1000 games with over 3333 overall)
00.40 I write and continue for some two hours and this includes watching the ending of the Red Road for the third time to be sure that I had the sequence of events in the order chosen by its director. I have read most of the On Line Critics Society reviews and debate why some criticise the sex scene for being too explicit or two long and yet did not make the same point for The Reader. The first is real life experience and second fantasy and the critics who expressed concern are male. Isn’t that interesting!
02.00 I have on line the Gold Globe site page of nominations and in tiny print against one name in some of the categories is the word winner. The results are being added without having to refresh. I write on and play more games until all the results are in. It pleases me greatly that that The Reader, In Bruges and Mama Mia are listed but where is the Boy in Stripped Pyjamas? Anna Paquin won a Globe, She was the11 year old who won an Oscar aged eleven as best support actress for her role in the Piano in 1993.
03.30 The golden rule is do not eat anything in the hours before going to bed although this is not a rule greatly observed in Mediterranean countries. I do not have the strength of mind to resist three small slices of the roasted bacon joint during the stay up.
04.18 is the time on the bedroom digit clock when I go to bed.
09.38 I get up for the last occasion having not noted the time for the rises before. Five hours of sleep is so so.
09.45 I take my time getting up and give priority to putting the wheelie bin out. I finish getting up and noted the blue sky and that the temperature is 52 put on my coat, lock up, grab the mobile phone and haversack and go out. I need to walk slowly and upright I tell myself. I have had no breakfast. I make my way first to W H Smith for a copy of Daily Mail and the second Cranford series DVD. I then go to Wilkinson’s for a large pack, 97 pence, of washing up pads. The assistant is not happy with me or the lady before me because we have come to the help desk but we only have one item each and there are long queues elsewhere. There only a handful of stalls open in Market Square. This is odd. I collect bank statements and then continue to the greengrocers by the station overhearing a conversation about how few stalls there are in Market square. Their competitors have obviously decided it was not worth while setting up. Is this because of recent weather or economic down turn? The shuttered Woolworths next to Smith’s is a sorry sight, I buy two cartons of red grapes for £1.50. They are offering a large pack of bananas for £1 but these are individually too small. I am tempted to go for toast and coffee but resist. I buy milk and bananas at Azda. The haversack is heavy. This is good for the soul as I make my way back up the hill. There is still blue sky but dark rain bearing clouds are ahead on the other side of the Tyne.
11.00 Back home and time for coffee and finish checking and positing the Red Road of Scotland write.
12.40 I watch the end of Bargain Hunt and then the news headline. I make a salad with pieces of the bacon joint. I have forgotten tomatoes. I need more lettuce. I have a cuppa soup. It is very hot so I enjoy both together. I read the Daily Mail. Paul McKenna has a three page article on the importance of sleep and how to train oneself to achieve a better pattern and quantity. I pay attention He recommends getting up half an hour earlier than usual wake up time. As I have no usual wake up time this is not practical for me. I get up when I wake and know I will not sleep again although I have been testing this to ensure it is so. He also recommends that one goes to bed only when one is sleepy. I have followed this rule for several years although I sometimes test this by going to bed after I have been dozing in front of the TV or at my work desk. His third rule is not to take naps during the day. I wish this was so but his words are noted. Exercise improves sleep he argues,. How and what you eat and caffeine and alcohol do not help. I agree with his advice that the TV in bed room, taking books and such like are things which stir the mind and therefore prevent sleep. I agree it is important for the room to be dark and that if you remain awake, you must get up again. It is important to sleep soundly and in this respect my location is ideal because of the absence of sound. I look forward to the second part.
17.00 The afternoon is something of a blur, I did photograph two volumes of work over 500 photos, and complete the registration process of other work. I washed and dried clothing and in the evening also washed and dried bathroom carpeting, flannels, tea towels and such like. I watched an episode of Lark Rise to Candleford on the Internet. I also dosed and had a piece of smoked Mackerel for tea, two fish cakes with baked beans for the evening meal and a carton of grapes around 7pm and various cups of coffee and tea, more than usual.
18.00 I watch local news media. There has been dramatic rainfall in Cumbria raising fears of flooding. I forgot to mention that on Sunday I watched a programme about the Kings of Scotland and the impact of what happened to William Wallace on Scottish political opinion and cultural identity. The programme had added to my appreciation of the Red Road,
19.00 I enjoy watching an episode of Pie in the Sky. It is vaguely familiar.
20.00 I watch an edited hour of the Golden Globe awards on Sky 1. Kate Winslet is shocked to win both nominated awards. I regret Meryl Streep and Mama Mia are not recognised. I must go and see Slum Dog Millionaire. I decide to defrost the freezer and during commercial breaks monitor progress.
21.00 It is the new series of 24. Day Seven. I watched the two hour prequel some time ago now. People who were dead have been brought back to life again, at least one person has. Goes back to the days of Bobby and JR. We have a female President. America has been building up to having a female President with the West Wing genre series with a woman President and obviously the writers of the new series had banked on Hillary winning the primaries against Barack Obama. I am not a great fan of 24 compared with Lost which is also due soon, and can watch or leave alone. 24 has become a one man show. The series begins with the CTU, the counter Terrorism Unit not just being shut down but its members persecuted because they used outside the law method including torture. Individual senators, reminding of the days of Joe McCarthy, have got the bit between their teeth and are out for blood, especially Jack. Jack is being honest and telling the truth and reminds of the great moment in The Reader when Kate turns on the Judge and asks him the question what would you have done in my situation? It is common for collective guilt to become focused on the scapegoat or two. Jack poses the question this way. There are people out to get us who are not just indiscriminate but prepared to use women and children and young vulnerable people to do their dirty work. They think nothing of using torture and killing anyone who gets in their way. Do you want me to stop them or not? If you want me to stop them then I have to use their methods? If you don’t then stop wasting my time and don’t blame anyone but yourself when they kill you or those you love and cake over. The choice is a simple one and it is time that you make up your mind. Once you have decided then get on with it.
23.00 Time to do the washing up, play some games and go to bed and sleep about 23.40
03.18 I wake up, get up and return to bed.
05.30 I wake get up and return to bed.
06.18 I wake and get up, I note waking and noting the time yesterday morning as 4.18 and today at 3.18 and 6.18.
