The day began slowly avoiding all matters of any seriousness
I watched one old film staring Margaret Lockwood Highly Dangerous released in 1950. It is a quirky cold war science fictionish light hearted film, in with a research scientist who listens to the evening boy's adventure series on radio for her nephew, is persuaded by the British Government to spend her holiday breaking into the most guarded secret installation is some unnamed Eastern Bloc nation which is creating an insect creature which could devastate the British and West's agriculture. The plot is full of more holes than the drainer I used for my pasta this evening and the comedy, if one could call it that, is of the silly kind, but I could not help feeling throughout that it was meant to be taken very more seriously and was saved from being switched off because of Margaret Lockwood.
I prolonged the mood my deciding to do some work on My Space having reached 500 pieces of writing and 10000 recorded reads. I have made two decisions. The first is to increase the number of friends to the same number of writing pieces and the second is to continue the practice of buying works of friends who are musicians, artists and writers within the limits of my budget and commitments. This means using Amazon and E Bay and the like when possible.
I am tempted by the first album of the jazz singer Annalee from Salt Lake City who has five of the tracks from Sweet Jazz on her site including versions of Summertime and My Funny Valentine. She is one of those artists that I can listen to time and time again, especially in the early hours. Among her best friends is LeJazzAffair who does a weekly podcast of contemporary jazz, some 200 achieved so far. One of my problems is finding the time to listen to my records, tape and disk collection although I am intentionally saving the records and tapes until I transfer them to back up CD's and DVD's once I have completed the photographs and slides to scan, sort, and in some instances print. MI will make time to list to some of the pod casts pf LeJazz Affair though when writing late at night into the early hours.
Also from the Annalee and LeJazzAffair sites I came across Wendy Colonna Austen Texas based who has generously put eleven of her tracks on MySpace. Whereas listening to Annalee I would like to eat a contemporary prepared meal with wine, it is steak and Peroni beer with Wendy. I settled for a stuffed lamb shoulder with rustic roast potatoes and a glass of red wine for the first selection at lunch and the remaining tracks in the evening with pasta filled with spinach and cheese sauce with a finely chopped salad of tomato, cucumber and olives breaking the culinary rules by creating a hot dish and cold dish on one plate. Incidentally I have acquired a couple of new black main course dishes. These are oblong with a good sloping sides to contain sauces and gravies. Coloured black on the face with white underside they fit nicely into my black and white Hegelian approach to everything. The meal and the tracks finished with apple pie and custard and it was time to turn my attention to international finance and British politics. The relaxed and light hearted day was over.
Although it looks as if Washington has a deal which will cost the average American family about $5000 dollars to bail out over paid and incompetent financial executives, to used assets in a pyramid selling scam to build up debts to each other of several trillion dollars and bring the American capitalist system, mirrored in London by Thatcher and Blair, the point of collapse which the prospect of economic recess and the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs as a consequence. The Chinese and Indian economies are laughing. USA and British governments of both main political are responsible for developing a system of deregulation and creative corporate accounting which not just allowed but encouraged the financial institutions to amass spectacular sums of corporate wealth while neglecting the position the poorest people in their countries and throughout the rest of the earth planet The approach has been unchristian and ethical immoral and those at the help should be hounded out of office unless they do two things. First takes measures to prevent or limit the recession and then provide the range of government intervention measures to help those most affected, that those who lose jobs and are at risk of losing their homes are provided with safety nets from they dropping into the vortex Wall Street and to less extent that London City has created.
Responsibility rests with America first because it changed the system introduced after the Great Crash in which the separation of banking interests became paramount and this allowed deposit banks to allow loans several fold the value of the deposits, lending each other the money to back up this system, and lending the money to governments and individuals beyond their means to pay it back especially if they lost jobs, became out of work or failed in their business ventures. What was worse they allowed the banks to gamble as much as they liked in currencies, stocks and commodities so while they penalised ordinary account holders if they are withdrawn without permission and with permission charged them excessively for loans they paid themselves ginormous bonuses even when their policies were provide disastrous. There has been the ludicrous situation of members of boards saying they did not realise what was happening and the levels of risks. I can see such people paying back the fees they received for rubber stamping the activities of their Executive directors and managers. These people should be named and shamed along with those who do not pay their fares on the transport system or who are caught shoplifting at the supermarket. For once the politicians may actually do this as they are limited in what they can do without it being counter productive.
The banks and financial institutions are asking not just that the bad debt is effectively written off but not included in the current and future balance sheets so they can re-establish confidence and gain the liquidity, the cash to be able to make loans for people to buy homes and set up new businesses.
My impression is that the situation has made it likely that the Republican Party will fare badly in the Presidential and Senate, State elections this fall but the future of the Labour Government remains in the balance. The ball is in the court of Obama as long as he does not fall over it.
Gordon Brown has re-established himself as someone of substance whatever his responsibility for the mess we are now in and the country is less likely to trust Cameron and Osborn the longer the crisis and economic difficulties remain. The Liberal Democrats with Vincent Cable as the front man on the financial situation will also be beneficiaries because they can remind as often as they like, I told you so. Oddly enough Gordon could be unseated before the next General election back benchers who dislike him or with scores to settle, the Bitterites as the former deputy Prime Minister called them. I came to these conclusions have watched the Politics show mid morning, the one hour special on BBC news at 8, Question time between 10.30 and 11.30 pm and then the Politics Show from then until 12.30 am.
It was also a day when ID card the biometric type were being introduced for overseas student to GB, and given the opposition this was for two reason. The student do not have a vote and this was a way for a terrorist cell to come to the UK. There is a groundswell of opposition to this latest totalitarian manoeuvre because of the longer risks of such a database. Will the technology become available to the Nazi and Stalinists of the future as well as the extent to which the government has lost data through its various agencies. Moreover government intention is to make an administrative charge for the privilege.
Terry Venables has understandably turned down the plea to manage Newcastle on a match to match basis because of a serious offer from a Nigerian consortium who claim to be close to making a deal and attempting to bring back Kevin Keegan. An interesting situation has developed with the cricket as Durham are in a good position to win but also are Nottingham. The next day's play will be crucial although by then it will be too late for me to consider travelling to Canterbury if Durham outside chance begins to look more promising.
The Who do you think you are programme featured a model whose ancestor was Lord Beaverbrook of Canadian background. She went in search of her other ancestors and found several scandals. There was a Newcastle Clerk who worked his way to being the manager of a ship yard and owning his own making a fortunate during the first world war and living in a grand mansion until he was prosecuted for hoarding food, a couple of tons wroth and left the area in disgrace. He then bribed a member of Lloyd George's party fro a baronet in what was the first modern cash for honours scandal. Winston Churchill and the King both sent letters expressing their disgust and these are retained in the Houses of Parliament records.
She then went to find out about Beaverbrook's ancestors in Canada finding another scandal when the brother of an ancestor shot another and killed himself setting fire to the family property. Going back further she discovered the family had come from the USA and then that they were among the first settlers having travelled with a party from North Yorkshire where confirmatory information was subsequently found. When I was at Ruskin a female friend had a date with Jonathan Aitkin part of the Beaverbrook Clan thus confirming that everyone is connected to everyone within half a dozen circles of contact during their lives and relationships If I have 500 my space friends and they have an average of 500 that is 250000 contact and if the additional 245000 have 500 each that is 125 million by only two levels removed.
