12.00 This is going to be a slow day which I begin without ambition but in good spirits. For lunch I have the second M and S sea food salad on a bed of spicy tomato sauce and spaghetti although there was not much sauce in this instance, I finished the meal with a second cup of coffee of the day. I watch an edition of Bargain Hunt in which the man in one of the teams was familiar but could not be immediately placed, and then I knew it was John who had won the special talented young people series of Big Brother House. Was the programme made before or after the Big Brother House appearance?
13.00 I could not decide between two films on Turner Classic Movies which I had previously seen, the Chance of a Lifetime in which the employees take over the running of a factory and Don Juan and then discover that it is not the mini series of Don Juan, but the third two hours of 1994 BBC production of Martin Chuzzlewit with Paul Schofield, John Mills, Tom Wilkinson Pete Postlewaite, Philip Franks, Joan Sims, Elizabeth Spriggs and Julia Sawalha. Now I must find when the closing episode is being shown. In this episode the activities of Postlewaite’s who establishes an insurance business without capital, depending on new premiums to meet any claims after creamy off as much as can be gambled on plus offices and high living expenses who successfully snares in the bad behaved Jonas Chuzzlewit. The other maim sub plot of this episode sees the nice but inwardly strong Tom Pinch leave his employer, Mr Pecksniff who he has come to see as he truly is, and his village, who love him dearly, to make his way in London where he is looked after by a friend John Westlock. Tom then rescues his sister from hearted bullying employers and the two set up house together. Later Tom’s sister and John fall in love and it is only as their relationship is being established that Martin Chuzzlewit returns from a failed enterprise in America.
15.00 This is a day of deliveries as I take in not one but two parcels of neighbours and decide to check out the local Staples. Later only one of the parcels is collected. The free gift has changed again two bottle of wine and Madera cake in a box. Pity I have so much wine in store already and the cake is off menu but it would make a good gift to pass on, just as well because this gift does not last more than few hours. At Staples the price of card was back to standard which has seen cost double over past five years but on return I did find some coloured card at good value but then the gift was naff so I have held off in the hope there is a further change of current gift which is of no interest.
17.00 Disappointed with my Staples visit I called nearby at Argos for their Spring catalogue and buy some prepared canvasses.
17.30 I have the Singapore Noodles dish but it is not more than a starter, so I wait and then have a salami sandwich. I fear it is not going to be a good food day with minimal exercise.
18.00 I have been working on yesterday’s writing and listening to Gib Radio, adding a Tina song to my profile
20.00 American Idol is divided into two hour long sessions which enables a view of Trail and retribution at 9. None of the first five performers including David Autchuleta impressed me although he did the judges. I look forward to the second half.
21.00 There was nothing original about this week’s first part of Trial and Retribution
22.00 Mr Cowell continued with his objective although destructive criticism of everyone this week. The continuation of the Beatles numbers is very odd, almost as if the planned approach could not happen and this was a standby. There have been no star coaching in this series which is also odd.
I have caught up with the photographing of completed work, set making with completed cards and tomorrow will try and complete documentation and annual account’s work. Completed the order to Staples for 10 250 card reams of coloured card works out at £4.70 ream plus the free gift a portable compressor for tyres and smaller items.. Had a look at available wooden boxes on internet where the cost is significantly less than one purpose designed box. Will go for inexpensive blue lever arch files for 69p plus VAT over the rest of holiday and perhaps another order of card depending upon on the gifts available.
00.10 Sopranos episode.
01.10 Bed
04.13 Waking and rising
04.13 Plus second rising did not note the time
07.30 I get up to begin the day which British and other Christians are this year marking as Good Friday
07.40 I drink coffee reflecting that I have not prepared for today and therefore will find it difficult. I wrestle with my overall philosophy that whatever set of beliefs one possesses they should be fully integrated into how you use your time, what you think and do and how you behave towards every human being you encounter, the other active life around you and that which appear inanimate to immediate human experience and between joining with those who chose to allocate particular days to give added attention to particular aspects of their beliefs. It is appropriate to set aside the normal stimulations of everyday. I like the idea of fasting and abstinence, of meditation but then "I like" does not fit into essence of what this day symbolises for me, which is sharing in the experience of the unjust suffering physical and mental, of others.
08.30. The BBC appears to have moved away from marking the day on its main channel’s except for having shown a dramatization of The Passion in the evening. There is the usual mixture of free, subscription and special purchase films and there is a full programme of live sport on Sky with two live games of Rugby League during the day, a Rugby Union featuring Newcastle Falcons this evening and then the deciding Third Test Match in New Zealand. At the most I am not settling with silence but music of the soul and spirit
09.00 I am listening to Brahms Concerto No 2 on AOL Radio Romantic Channel which is familiar but some time since hearing. Later I will listen to a Virgin Records set of CD’s starting with the Saint John Passion and the Easter Oratorio. I have the Ascension Oratorio for Sunday. I have gone through my CD collection and selected some Bach Organ Music some come Canto Gregoriano, I have put back some Brendal Piano by mistake, and later retrieve, but also have the Karl Jenkins Mass for Peace some Benianimo Gili and Joe Carreras. Later over the weekend there is the Verdi Requiem and Mandama Butterfly, Turandot and Jacqueline Du Pre. Brendal is at the Sage in April and I am tempted but will be surprised if there are still tickets. There are now fluffs of clouds crossing the otherwise blue sky, but there looks to be a chill wind but no excuse for not walking.
09.30 Time to get myself washed and ready to go out and also prepared some appropriate work for the day. I will leave the Household accounts and documents till the morrow.
10.30 After washing etc working my mobile phone became an issue and then as the weather changes, and I searched for papers to commence some work later the inevitable happened and the desire to start work overcome any enthusiasm for walking exercise so I have return to my desk with the Bach Toccata and Fugue, a Triosonate, the Choralpartitta, the Praeludium and Fuge Es Dura and the Sechs Chorale von verschiedener Art, played by Helmut Walcha.
11.30 The morning has changed from bright sunshine to dark clouds with droplets of rain. The search for work in mind proved more time consuming and going through boxes of papers and documents and I settled for a selection of work to completed over the coming days, electing to commence with work with no significance related to this day. The receipts for when I commenced self employment in June 1992 having undertaken a self employment course which provided the basics for keeping accounts although at this point I had not registered for VAT. I was accept at first as writer for Inland Revenue purposes having to supply a list of publications for which I had received payment and then even better for VAT as the an artist, writer and musician category. I obtained planning permission from the local authority on the understanding that there would be no increase in car traffic and parking which was amusing given the extent to which there was overspilll parking outside from the adjacent hotels, the way youngsters in particular sped down the bank outside the house occasionally skidding and crashing into the fencing of the first house at the junction. For those first months I kept every receipt for which I thought I might be able to submit a claim although subsequently I had to eliminate a considerable amount of items after checking with taxman.
11.45 A salad with brown bread, a banana and a cup of tea for lunch. When I hear organ music I think of the day when en route to the beach, I entered a church somewhere in the South of France where hopefully the location will have been noted, I think in Bridget Bardot country and found that someone was practicing on the organ and then perhaps noticing the presence of visitors commenced to give a recital. It was blisteringly hot outside but the church was still and cool and the sound of his playing enveloped. It was one of the most spontaneous magical moments of my life of which there have been several.
