1288 George Melly's Last Stand Programme and 101 Blog list

Only making "a what's on tonight" search did I see listed a programme about the last days of George Melly on BBC 2, and subsequently learnt that the programme had previously been shown on BBC 4 and is available in its 60 minute entirety on a computer reference. This is so much more than a portrait of a larger than normal life talented personality, performing and giving and receiving love in all its dimensions, meeting his end of days, despite dementia and double lung cancer with acceptance and humour. It is programme about the nature of the human spirit, understanding, forgiveness, toleration, being true to oneself and love. It is available to view on

The programme rounded an exceptional three and half hour viewing period, the second programme of which was the next episode of Lark Rise to Candleford also on the BBC I player, This was the most moving so far, only part caused by familiarity with the core characters. Authentically set in rural Oxfordshire England at the turn of the 19th into 20th centuries the programme has a beautiful and tender reality enabling each character to reveal their rounded depths of experience. There are no short cut or caricature personalities so that the programme enlighten and enriches those who care to be engaged. In this inside out sandwich there was the eagerly awaited next episode in the penultimate series of Lost which featured Sayed after his apparent escape from the Ireland into an assassin working for, well get who? This unexpected twist was not the only clever piece of writing, although I have to say the episode lacked the pace of the end of lasts season and the first two openers. Perhaps it was me but I thought the there was something missing.
Earlier I had enjoyed a programme about the life of Fred Dibnah who first came to national TV fame because of his role of blowing up industrial chimneys and former industrial buildings before we discovered his love of restoration work sharing his interest in discovering not just how machinery worked but how buildings were put together. Not only did the public enjoy his down to earth explanations but it was evident from the film that he was widely respected by experts involved with our heritage and restoration work.

A different kind of experience was open the evening viewing with the last half hour of the Antiques Road show which came from Bexhill and the De Vere Pavilion, I had one or two holidays at Bexhill on Sea with my mother and two iof her sisters and went to a Summer show at the Pavilion.

Having yesterday written that I preferred to watch and listen to recordings of Freddie Mercury I switched channels at one point in the day to find Queen at Milton Keynes. This stage was comparatively bare, especially when compared to that provided at the memorial concert, but this only reinforced the focus of everyone's attention, the music and the performance. I have not attended a concert at Milton Keynes although I was caught up in the traffic once as stopped en route for a meal at a restaurant there, part of a chain which meant one knew the menu in advance, and where for a time I had vouchers for a discount.

There was also more F A Cup football football, a drab game of two teams desperate for success, the Boro and Sheffield United whose fans caused the departure of Bryan Robson earlier in the week. The match ended 0.0 and a replay. The second part of the curse of Tutankhamun was also on this evening but I was otherwise engaged.

To mark the anniversary this week of joining Myspace I list my Blogs published on this site. Nothing like the two or three a day notes I put on AOL which totalled over 750 in about 18 months with at least 25000 photos uploaded, probably more but I quickly forget. The dates are approximate to within a day or two. I had intended three lots of 110.75 but managed over 275. This is the first 100.75
