1815 Visit to Newcastle for pyjamas, deja vu computer problems and games

Sunday was a day I would have preferred not to have experienced and yet I am delighted to have had another day to experience and that there are hopefully many more days to experience with self awareness, full uses of senses and with memory

Later than planned I set off to Newcastle by the Metro to purchase an additional pair of pyjamas having been unable to find anywhere selling the traditional item in South Shields as neither Marks and Spencer’s or British Home Stores has departments catering for the adult male and the enlarged George as the Asda supermarket did not stock the item.

To lessen the boredom of the journey I took with me Summers with Durham, an account of the experience of watching Durham County Cricket from its inception as a First Class County up to winning the Championship title for the first time in 2008 by Tom Wellock the Cricket writer who has seen more days play, home and away than individual and that includes players and club officials. One day I shall get out my own records and then compare his selection of memories with my own. But having said that I doubt whether there will be an quarrel over the days I have also experienced.

At Newcastle I alighted at Monument uncertain if the Haymarket was again open on Sundays after two years of closure for major changes above and below ground. I walked through a budget price store on the same level at the Metro station Piazza then took the escalator to the pavement level, unsuccessful in the pyjama search there although I did notice a good selection of the coffee making, of the kind where hot water is poured over the coffee into a glass container and then a filter is inserted to separate the coffee dregs from that poured into cups. For a couple of years I had used a single cup vessel but once starting with regular attendance at the cricket I had found my three to four cup size appropriate for filling the large vacuum picnic flask when I found the smaller steel version were not as effective as I had hoped. Then I had dropped and smashed the glass on the kitchen floor before relaying the laminated covering of the stone tiles, I searched in vain for a time for a replacement, Wilkinson’s in South Shields and Sunderland were blank but I found one in Jarrow or was it Gateshead? one but at Jarrow or perhaps Gateshead I did. Then over the past couple of days the cap separating the coffee from the metal lid slipped making it difficult to pour and then when I tried to clean the filtering element I could not reassemble. However on return I took time and while I do not think I have put it back together as it was before it works and the coffee should not touch the concave lid

In Newcastle I made my way along the pedestrian thoroughfare passing Fenwick’s’ to Marks and Spencer’s’ where there was a stand with summer and winter pyjamas ranging in price from £10 to £30 for those of thicker material. I made an excellent buy of extra large size with elasticated waist in a dark blue for a price reduced from £13 to a few pence under £10. I am wearing them now and they are superior to the pair I had been using to avoid the oily cream placed on my body before bedtime from staining the bedding. I also needed to buy some cards and these were also in the store and then it time for a salmon sandwich pack and a regular Americano Coffee with a side of cold milk. I was lucky to find a seat at a table as the seats at a counter to one side and been replaced by racks of magazines. I then went on a explore of the prepared processed meats counters and the salad. On a social occasion earlier in the year when celebrating the 70th birthday I had shared a giant platter of meats, olives and salad items which I thought was said to have come from M and S. Previously I searched two stores in London, one in Oxford Street had failed so I was not optimistic of success in Newcastle I was right. It occurs that I should check the internet shop edition later.

I then went to see if the Haymarket Metro station was finished and open. Open it was but finished it was not. nearing completion though. Before entering the station I crossed over the main road where Newcastle University is spending £200 million on developments to match those already undertaken by the University of Northumbria also located in the city and offering 30000 places compared to 20000 for the older institution. Passing by the large university book store it was evident that the new University public access and student reception offices are completed although the there is still work required to finish of the impressive new stone steps to the university central piazza with the ancient student union building on the left and the Playhouse Theatre opposite. The stairs are not in daily use but work is still required on the walkway suitable for those in wheelchairs, with push chairs or who find steps difficult. I was tempted to explore further but decided to make my way home returning around 2pm. It was just as well that the outing was successful because frustration and uncertainty what to do took over for the greater part of the day until late evening.

Earlier the good function desk top computer after the recent crash fright was again exhibiting tantrums despite the down loading of the Vista service pack 2 which had taken ages. Now not one but both the wireless and the cable mouses were behaving oddly and ineffectively. Unfortunately it was sometime before I remembered that the cable unit had been misbehaving badly and forgetting this could have had disastrously consequences.

A couple of days before the security programme notified that it had blocked two programmes which were causing instability, adding they would be permanently deleted until I rebooted. I should have been more alert, found out what this was all about and taken action but I was busily engaged in whatever and forget the warning when I turned the machine for bedtime. Think this was responsible fort he problems which had now arisen I thought I was restore the computer to a previous position and then found that this was this was to when the Vista update pack 2 was downloaded, I did attempted to restore but was told it was not successful, just as well. A little later I was advised that I needed to upload the latest version of a programme which provide support for videos and graphics, I think and this also coincided with a new Microsoft update,

However I am in advance of myself because fearing the worst again as pessimism replaces optimism, reality replaces idealism, with the passing of the decades I decided to use the lap with a keyboard attached- that worked, the loudspeakers, that worked as well and the wireless mouse, which did not, a big clue me thinks. However before I could get going there were 14 vista updates to download and process and a wedge of the latest security latest improvements. Having realised there was a problem with the wireless mouse I checked the boxes of old mouses to find one to fit the lap top connection came across USB linked which to surprise was working and so this led back to the desktop as mouse problems appear to be a contributory factor. And while the wireless did not function the USB connect mouse does. And there are two new symbols on the control panel; page, one for Blue Tooth devices and the other for Nvideo. The net result is a fully function desktop.

Now to DeJa vu in that this morning I set off for a full English breakfast and coffee plus voucher for £1.99 before visit my GP to report progress in the skin condition which eh confirmed although the remedy will be continued over the next two weeks. It is an omen methinks for potentially worse to come although I hope to avoid some of the horrors which others experience.
The highlight of Sunday after was the unexpected win of the Formula 1 Grand Prix by Jenson Button in Brazil. Who because of atrocious weather conditions had sorted towards the back of the grid with his team and rival on the front, Early on in the race there were accidents involving five cars which meant a rapid improvement in his position and this was sustained throughout the rest of the race. His Brazilian team was unable to sustain the lead and worse was to follow because as the race finished he had a type blow out which meant a pit stop and finishing seventh to Jenson fifth position and Lewis Hamilton, the champion last year on the podium third. There is one championship race to come in the oil rich state of Abu Dhabi and no one can gain the points to overtake Jenson which gave him the championship title. Given the failure of Lewis Hamilton’s car earlier in the season his rapid rise up the table was just as remarkable and omens well for rival between the two British based teams next season. In the evening I enjoyed the third episode of Emma which I shall report on when the series has concluded. Saturday’s X factor show suggested the group is not as strong as previous year but South Tyneside’s Joe Edderly pit in another cracking performance although he has several rivals, two in the camp of Simon Cowell, whereas Louis Walsh’s groups are awful with one rejected the first week and one cannot sing but entertain and are young good looking and popular so could survive for a few weeks more and he other a makeshift group of three better than average singers made up into a group and this shows.

Finally I come to games play where my attention has switched from the chess and patience games played against the computer to the shoot them balls of two Luxor games and Mah-jong tile pairing game also set in Egypt and involves a journey across the land collecting artefacts.

I continue to play chess but relaxed rather than the intense attempts to score 101 games at each level. At the moment I am concentrating on level 2 with a current stretch of 50 wins and 67 the maximum with some 800 games played whereas at level 1 the run was 114 games with 654 won out of 670. The maximum run at level 3 is 46 and level 4 50 with 282 and 312 games won respectively. In the first patience game, Free Cell where I once completed the first 10000 games in succession I have won 2018 of 2028 games played with an opening run of 850 and in Spider Spider to indicate a web structure the best run remains 242 with 1096 games from 1121.

And now to Luxor and Luxor rising which are games of multiple levels each at a different location and where there is opportunity to acquire points, lives and assistance to slow the movement of the balls in various colours, the number of which increases with levels, red green, blue level and purple to begin and then white and then black so far, In order to end a level and the sub games within each level making between 80 and 100 games to complete each game, one has to achieve chains of three balls of teh same colour in which instance one can gain a symbol 29of which leads to an additional life or one of additional aids. These have to be collected by falling into the mechanism which releases the coloured balls and where it is possible to switch colours by pressing the right mouse button sometimes. Chains of balls flow across the screen travelling pathways, through tunnels and other obstructions heading towards and exit which reached results in losing a life. With a little practice and attention to what is happening, coupled with the ability to concentrate as they approach the exit, and at the arrival for new chains provide the opportunity slow down the flow and blast away dangerous accumulations, so one eye has to be collecting the aids, it is possible to complete the series of games at the various level until reaching a game with specific levels where its construction is such that one loses multiple lives unless you are able work out how to overcome the obstacle by quick wittedness without making mistakes. The original Luxor game has proved the more difficult because only once have I managed to survive level 5.4 and went onto level 6.6. In terms of points I accumulated over 2 million points by level 5.4 but less when going further which is odd. My main achievement is with Luxor rising where I have been able to proceed to level 7,4 with great regularity acquiring 3 million points, but unlike the original game I have a way to move forward and presently have reached level 10 of the 14 and accumulated 7 million points but I suspect I will not progress further as the number of lives is reducing rapidly. The games are a good way to relax and for mastering a challenge from the comfort and security of home. It does not compare to the five year old child who with his older family members and their parents have completed all the 243 described walks of Wainwright, since the age of two. This appears hard to accept but apparently the family goes walking every weekend which the weather permits and there are photographs at the high spot of each walk to prove the achievement.

1814 Aspects of a week

I need to fill in the gaps between the long sessions reading and writing about the assassination of Kennedy, a subject which was least on my as I walked down to the health centre to see my GP about the aggravating skin condition and where I had tolerated the itchiness for several days, not taking the relief cream since it had become responsible for the extension of the rash to other parts of my body since starting at the back my neck within the hairline.

On my way home clutching a large bag contained a moisturising relief cream and two boxes of another intended to treat the complaint along with the Loratadine, I changed direction and headed for a voucher breakfast costing £1.99 and which covered two slices of bacon, two hash browns, an egg, a sausage, large mushroom slice and baked beans with a black coffee and a side of cold milk. As with the previous visit the meal was exceptional well cooked and arrived sooner than before so there only time to flip through the copy of the Daily Mail I had purchased while making the detour. It was mid morning by the time I return home and undertook further catch up work with set making, registration and photographing while working out the new regime of creams and the tablet, and changing clothes and bedding more frequently than before as a consequence.

It was that I came across Executive Action my interest in the Assassination of President Kennedy ignited.

I believe it was in the early 1980’s that I acquired a book written after the House Committee on Assassinations had published its final report and significant different from the Warren Commission and in so doing exposing it as cover up emanating at the highest levels. I had lent the book to a colleague at work and when he had died prematurely in his early sixties I decided not to ask the family for its return,

For many years I had believed that I was on a college trip to Sweden when the death of Kennedy was announced and only with the past five years did I work out that it could not have been, nor was it the speech Ich bin ein Berlinner which was made in June of that year, yet I retained the image of being out on a walking explore while staying at a Folk High School and we had been on a wooded hillside resting when the new of something dramatic reached us and we commiserated with a young American who was also staying at the High School at the time. Oh memory and its failure.

I have been again diverted from my writing, this time by a recording on Biography channel of a Mark Knofler concert (Dire Straits the former local band from Whitley Bay whose music I continue to play constantly followed by the Amy Whitehouse Performance at a French music Festival in 2007 when she was at the top of her form, looking great and singing her now well known numbers from the then recent album - Back to Back. She is rarely mentioned these days and only occasionally replayed. I also diverted myself to undertake the washing up reminding that there was more ironing to complete and the bed to remake as 4pm Thursday afternoon approached. It has remained a miserable weather day but the temperature good, approaching 60 degrees and the highest for October in this area and more generally although on the sixth over 60 degrees was reached in the midlands the mid west and on the coast south of London.

I commenced the ironing last night while watching the last English International in the World Cup preliminaries. It was not a great match but England won 3.0 and James Milner and David Beckham hit the woodwork on either side of the goal posts in the last seconds. England won 9 of its ten matches with the one loss on Saturday and of the 9 teams which immediately qualified from Europe after heading a group of 6, England came second to Spain who had a perfect 10 out 10 in their group which included Turkey, and ahead of Germany who although undefeated had 8 wins and 2 draws. Others already qualifying are Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Serbia Switzerland and Slovakia. Russia, Portugal, France and Norway are among the eight teams who will hold a two leg playoff to join the 9 already through.

Sunderland had a great win against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. I listened on the watched part of the replay on Sky before switching over to the BBC for match of the day. It was the second following Aston Villa who beat Chelsea. Sunderland’s goal should have been technically disallowed because a Liverpool supporter having thrown a beach ball balloon on to the pitch which the goal keeper and the Liverpool players did not remove, a Sunderland play had the opportunity to score and the ball cannoned off the beach ball into the net with the goal keep appearing undecided where to go for the ball or the balloon. He appealed and the referee consulted the lineman and the goal was allowed although technically the rules state that if the ball hits a foreign object within the field of play the referee should then have stopped the game and restarted with both sides being given the opportunity to gain possession. However what happened was justice in the circumstance and If I was Liverpool I would ensure that the offending spectator caught on camera was banned from football grounds for life. Liverpool were in poor spirits because they had lost their two keys players and others were rested having got of the place from the Argentine after celebrating and unexpected qualification in the World Cup. However this does not take away from a significantly improved Sunderland side under Steve Bruce who had bought well and organised the team with new belief and resolve and at present they look like competing for a top six place which means they are playing to the level of Manchester United who they nearly beat at Old Trafford, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City and Aston Villa who are also doing well so far. The crowd was said to have 50000 just below the ground maximum for the first time in several seasons and on the overall play Sunderland should have won by a 2 or 3 goal margin, a view which everyone including the Liverpool manager agreed.

I have watched two of the 20 20 cricket games being held in the Indian competition fort eh most successful clubs side from the international world of cricket, including Sussex and Somerset from the UK. I have been unable to find the full score tables s on the competition site as the BBC is not providing the information on Teletex or the BBC sport’s site on the Internet. The games are being shown live on Euro sport and from the results so far Somerset will not progress from stage of four mini leagues but Sussex still have an outside chance. And now for a different dimension

Having recently viewed the film Troy I was intrigued to find a film called The Last Glory of Troy which centres on the arrival Aeneas and the Trojans after their wondering when Troy was sacked through the clever trick of the Wooden horse when a thousand ships were said to have been launched to reclaim the fair Helen. The film claimed that by defeating the ambitious, ruthless and cunning Turnus, King of the Retuli, before he was able to marry against her will, Lavina the daughter of Latinus, King of the Latins, Aeneas was able to bring peace to the area, marry Lavinia himself and help form Rome and its Empire. This version of the mythological legend was created by Virgil 70 to 29 BC in his epic poem the Aeneid. Julius Caesar and his family had created the legend that he was direct descendent of the mythical Prince who escaped the fall Troy. Titus Livius, known as Livy was a contemporary of Virgil 59BC to 17 AD and was responsible for the great work on the founding of the City. The myth. including the marriage of Aeneas with Lavinia is not mentioned. The film is a stock costume drama of this period but my search produced an amazing Wikipedia site guide which systematically makes references to the great Wars before 1775 and any films which are known to have been based on those taking place in the period, including reference to the literature or historical works on which the films are based,

I could not resist the umpteenth showing of Quo Vadis of Friday evening. The uncontested star performance is that of Peter Ustinov as Nero with his singing, fears and obsessions and a cuddly giant of a man who wrestles a voracious bull to save life of a former Princess, Deborah Kerr who has become a Christian when in the household of a former Roman General who has been asked to look after this hostage of Rome. She is the awarded to Robert Taylor the returning victorious commander of a Roman Legion as his reward but she escapes before he can claim her. Inevitable they fall in love and eventually he is converted, and in fairness he plays the role well with the help of an excellent script. I have always liked the inclusion of the eight beatitudes before the Commandments and the Christians singing as they faced a horrific death by the lions always leaves me moved.

The contrast between this film and Captain Hamilton could not have been greater although the story was not without interest, I may have the title wrong as I cannot find further trace of a man for TV film. The story, with one stopped but the other falling into the hands of is well worn, a soviet missile going astray, in fact two, one stopped and the other falling into the hands of a middle east Terrorist group, involving renegade USA special forces and a NATO hero from Sweden and second heroics. All too familiar but for once the hero came from a Nato allay.

However the film was streets ahead of one of the worst films I recall seeing. The film shown have been Narrow Escape also known as A thousand Men and a Baby about a Korean baby “adopted” by a ship’s crew and then by the naval medical officer and his wife at Christmas. This is a true story and he captain of ship disobeyed orders on allowing the baby on board and bring it back to the USA rather than transferring to a civilian cargo vessel back to Korea. The reason why the rescue happened is that the Captain had a extraordinary career as a pilot during World War II, and then involved with the development and dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan and then with the development of aircraft from carriers and then put in charge of a carrier with 1000 men John T Hayward and the medical officer Hugh Keenan and his adopted son Daniel who attended subsequent reunions of the ships’ crews.

Now that was the film billed and with credits at the beginning and end, However it was not the film in the middle. This is the story as far as I could work out. I small time sexist comedian loses his stars in the eyes girl friend to a Las Vegas mafia con man believing he is a film maker who will get her a deal. His best friend is a mixed race lawyer DA with a respectable mother. In the second half of the film the mother tells her son that his father is in fact a well know Los Vegas mafia boss with whom she had a casual relationship. She fails to mention that she had been a whore and a druggie but her former pimp arrives called Whitee because of his white hair although a black and demands money or he will reveal her background to the son and in public to affect the son’s career., Mother appeals to the son and the son contacts his father, as a good friend of his mother without admitting the man is his father. Father arranged for Whitee to be a place X with a car load of drugs, so the DA can arrange for the police to pick him up. There is a shoot out and Whitee is killed solving teh problem without teh problem of a court case and publicity. Son thanks his natural father and that should have been the end of that.

Meanwhile the two but sexist comedian has been fired from his job at a Las Vedas hotel owned by Lucky, the daughter of a, guess who, the father of the DA. She is supposed to have a close but competitive relationship with the father. Against father’s wishes she had married a man the same age as her father and another mafia hood all the way from Scilly and who has a villa in the South France. They have a son and live the highlife outside the USA so she has little contact with her father who against her wishes has married someone who lives most of the time in Los Angeles and their marriage ends through prolonged separations. Lucky’s husband has a daughter by his first wife who is she same age as his bride. She is an irresponsible, mindless, drink and drug play girl who on whim has married once with the man having to be paid off and this time married the big comic entertainer at one of the hotels where the then sexist comic was sacked all those years before. She takes him off to meet daddy and step mom at the villa in France where step mum’s daddy has also come to see his daughter. The recently big time comic soon realises that his father in law does not acknowledge his existence and his wife is immediately regretting her decision. He goes for a swim and climbs on an out to sea float where sunbathing, is guess who, his mother in law although neither knows who each other is and have an oblique heart to heart talk about their respective situations and strike a chord, yes could this be the real thing. but is impossible when they discover their legal relationship and circumstances.

These are immediately to change as the comedian is freed by his bride who goes back to Las Vegas to her former lover and his dodgy associate one of who it out for Lucky, who has also returned to Las Vegas after catching her husband with someone else and has returned to manage her hotel. The comedian and she get together but there is to be one final twist,

At the beginning of the account of the film mention is made that the comedian’s girlfriend was taken away by a crook and she is now tied to a man who is possessive and violent and who has a hatred for Lucky, kidnapping her son and takes him on his private jet plane to New York. However the ex girl friend spills the beans to her former friend and now internationally recognised comedian, who contacts the DA and they arrange to meet the jet plane as it arrives in New York and the DA’s as well as advising the child’s mother of the position who also get on another jet look alike with her daddy. The child is rescued, the villain warns his former girlfriend he will be out to get her, and she wishes she had the taken the advice of the DA and her former boyfriend and asks is it too late for them. He says it is and goes off to play happy families with the daughter of his best friend’s natural father. Wow isn’t fiction great. All those beautiful and talented bodies living the high life, but wait a moment are they not most dangerous criminals whose wealth is based on exploitation, corruption and naked crime? I wonder how many people other than me witnessed the experience of watching the film that was not, without a title.

It is Sunday morning and very cold, just above freezing and computer is playing up although I know the problem and do not know how to fix it. The security system advised that it had blocked two operating programmes which were causing instability and these would only become removed or deleted when the computer was closed. I forgot this aspect and to day when I attempt to play a game or internet visual, listening to Steve Bruce on the BBC sports site the mouse wireless or cable freezes. Fortunately I disabled the multiple weather windows to be able to complete this writing. Where I can upload to MY Space and Google is the next challenge.

I will leave mention of the impressive discussion in Parliament about Government policy in Afghanistan and towards Pakistan and much gnashing of teeth by Members of the House of Commons about the way the expenses has been handled. There has also been more bad news from within the extended family.

1813 Notes on the death of a President after seeing Executive Action and JFK

When I commenced writing I thought it would be a ramble. a walk with the object to enjoy the experience rather than getting from A to B as quickly as possible. Most of my writings are rambles. Not that I do not have a writing plan, including a list of subjects, but I remain uncertain what I am going to say until the process begins.

For this piece the list of subjects included the film Executive Action which I came across on a free film channel on Monday afternoon after a good morning when the visit to my GP produced immediate results followed by an excellent breakfast for £1.99 and later shop a shop at the supermarket produced additional bargains; I thought of saying something about the amount of time I spend each day playing games against the computer, and that my evening ended with an interesting film called the Last Glory of Troy, all on a day when it is said over 300 Members of the House of Commons out of some 650 were reported to have received letters asking them to immediately pay back a portion of expense claims from the past five years, or provide the chief investigator and his team with required information and explanation. The team will have had to examine over one million pieces of paper and check the contents to confirm that individuals had made inappropriate from unintentional mistakes all the way to calculated fraud.

I mentioned the hundreds of thousands of pieces of documentary evidence because of the quantity of material that investigators into the killing of President Kennedy in 1963 have had available to them but failed to find the truth, at times deliberately. All the expense claims now being challenged were authorised by officials employed to ensure that they had been made within the rules, rules which the House of Commons, half full with trained lawyers had themselves set. Officials cannot be trusted and Politicians even more so to establish the truth and to protect the public interest.
I had intended keeping to the writing plan after watching the 1973 film Executive Action, made in a laid back documentary style, including available footage of the execution of President Kennedy at 12.30 in Dallas Texas, 22 November 1963 and which has Robert Ryan as a billionaire Texan oil baron complete with his own luxury train unit as a chief instigator of the execution, and Burt Lancaster a disaffected Black Operations organiser for the Government, recruiting and training the three teams of killers and using his extensive contacts to fix the setting for the assassination, trying to bring on aboard a mystery elderly oil magnate figure, suggesting that the man is someone more wealthy and powerful with political and military links to facilitate in effect a coup d’etah and the subsequent cover up.

Despite all the available information secured by the Warren Commission which published some sixteen volumes of evidence and the rest of the information which in theory will become available for public scrutiny in twenty years time when the background work of the House Select Committee on Assassinations should become available, I doubt if it will ever become possible to establish who carried out the execution of the President, who were the top conspirators and who led the cover up and was responsible for the subsequent deaths of many of key figures and witnesses, and with the killing of chief suspect Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby when in police custody the most disturbing of all.

I have used the expression coup d’etah with care because there is evidence that many interests became determined to prevent John Kennedy having a second term of office and with the prospect of him being followed by his brother Bobby and then by younger brother Ted. Whether this desire, and for some an obsessive hatred became translated into the killing of the President remains an unanswered question although the 1978/9 House Special Committee went as far as saying that it was likely there had been a conspiracy and pointed the finger at the named individuals in the Mafia. I have also used the term execution as well as assassination and killing rather than murder which is usually associated to a single act by one more individuals. The idea that one man could kill a leading politician or head of state without significant assistance has always struck me as preposterous in modern times given the scale of the intelligence and military forces used to prevent such an event.

On Tuesday morning when I came to write about the film I remembered that two or three years ago I had bought an inexpensive DVD of the 1991 Oliver Stone film JFK, seen in theatre at the time and on TV but which I had not viewed since purchase and realising that both films used similar approaches and covered similar issues, the Oliver Stone film in greater detail, I decided to first watch the DVD before continuing. I then did some simple research and reading from the Internet primarily through Wikipedia and became so engrossed that another 24 hours later I am still at work and what started as a ramble has become a writing marathon.

Because of elapse of time my knowledge had become rusty and I had not kept up with some of the more recent developments including books and films although I did see the 1993 film Ruby which I only vaguely remember, in addition to JFK. I knew something of some of the conspiracy theories involving the Mafia, anti Castro Cubans and the intelligence and secret operations forces of the USA Government. I knew that the single shooter argument had been significantly discredited and had seen the Zapruder film of the shootings. I was not aware of the alleged involvement of Texan Oil businessmen and the alleged connection and involvement of Lyndon B Johnson who had been foisted on Kennedy against his will and who Kennedy planned to drop for the 1964 election.
My usual approach would be to discuss the two films and then attempt to find out how far their contents matched the available facts and then come to judgement and make any general comments about the subject in a wider perspective as well as relating the even to my own experiences, This time I felt the need to approach writing about the subject differently

It is the duty, the responsibility of all government to defend and protect the institutions of government and those who they employ in government work, and this can create problems and have unintended consequence for Representative governments with public access to information civil rights and to an open Criminal Justice system plus strong limitations on the use of executive power in peace times, than it does for dictatorships and hybrid forms of democratic government. One indicator of the extent to which a government is attempting to stick its constitutional ideals is the way it monitors its institutions and the those who work, in theory, on behalf of the people.

This duty general duty of government will include the covering up of mistakes and situations which could seriously undermine public confidence in the institutions, especially if the foundation of the state is threatened, especially if there disclosure of the use of secret operations and those commonly described as Black Ops in peace time.

I also believe that representative governments are more likely than dictatorships to make use of clandestine groups and organisations, especially international groups and organisations, including criminal organisations to undertake such operations which in turn include everything from coup d’etah in other countries, to executions, some made to appear natural deaths or accidents, to break-in’s and bugging. Other methods include discrediting either by the release of provable damaging information or by planting rumour and innuendo to framing individuals resulting in imprisonment and detaining in secured institutions concerned with mental ill health. These methods have become more sophisticated over the years with satellite surveillance, microscopic cameras, listening and tracking devices, together with a range of voluntary and paid informants. In the UK and I would expect in the USA the use of computer databases and integrated systems means that information on people, vehicles, private homes and temporary accommodations and on travel as well as telephone and computer communication can be made available within seconds to anyone, anywhere and at time with the technology.

To undertake undercover security work whether directly or indirectly a Representative government is also more likely to call on a range of individuals to assist on a voluntary or paid basis, under contracts or casually and through blackmail as well as idealism, to assist the state, whereas in the Dictatorship individuals can be recruited, trained and deployed from within the hierarchical organisations of the state and fear and blackmail are more likely to be used to supplement the work of the official forces.

Within the structure of most Representative Government there have until recently been several intelligence gathering and action organisations as well as the management of black operations, involving the three armed forces, the police and the designated government organisations such as in the UK MI 5 and 6 and probably an MI 7 named so because of the fictional character James Bond, in order to contract out Black Ops. Rivalry, competitiveness and failure to communicate between such organisations has been commons.

In addition to its own directly controlled government agencies, a wide range of individuals such as members of the Diplomatic service, the media and personalities able to travel to countries where there are restrictions such as Entertainers, writes, filmmakers, Trade Union and Local Government Officials, Members of Professional bodies and International Sports men and women are often recruited, frequently on a casual basis. Criminals and cranks are also useful because they can be discredited, restrained and got rid off more easily than others.

More recently there has been teh growth of privately organised special security organisations usually staffed by ex military, police and secret service officers. There is also the reciprocal use of the official and black ops services of friendly nations and these days international security organisations and the cooperation of the special action teams employed by the international corporations, Religious bodies because of their innate idealism and fanaticism, international political bodies and politicians, and trade unions and “voluntary” and “Independent” or “charitable” organisations including those providing aide including emergency aid are also fertile recruiting grounds for special missions. This is the way of the world.

The problem is that these systems are also open to misuse although less so under Representative governments than in Dictatorships because the media in our system has an important role as watch dogs along with Opposition Political Parties and independent interests groups.

I also understand why the Kennedy Family aroused such strong emotions in the USA. Jo Kennedy’s record suggested he was right of centre and it is factual that the help of the Mafia was accepted in the campaign where John Kennedy only obtained a 100000 more votes in total than Richard Nixon and major queries arose about the regularity of some voting. Brother Bobby as Attorney General had started his campaign against the Mafia with a dozen times more prosecutions that President Eisenhower. Moreover the Mafia had considerable links with the Anti Castro Cubans because of their involvement in gambling, drugs and vice in Havana before the revolution and they were used by the CIA to help in assassination attempts on Castro and the Bay of Pigs invasion. There were many within the CIA, among the Cuban exiles and the crime syndicates who have never forgiven Kennedy for not sending in air power and other direct military assistance to help the invasion when things started to go wrong. President Kennedy had then told the CIA that there was to be no further invasion attempts although he put pressure for action to end the regime and he was not adverse to assassination as long as the Government could not be implicated.

He had also alienated the right in USA because he appeared to be going soft against Communists and to be pro the Blacks and their demand for Civil Rights led by Martin Luther King. He was not only against escalating the USA involvement in Vietnam but asked his officials to prepare a withdrawal plan for all American Forces saying it was not a war which could be won. His successor, Vice President Lyndon B Johnson then initiated a vast increase in the deployment of forces and their weapons creating giant profits for the arms manufacturers and the industries associated with a war machine. Just how many American and Vietnamese lives would have been saved had Kennedy survived the execution will never be known.. Kennedy also negotiated the first Nuclear Testing ban treaty with Russia and the UK. The Kennedy’s were also practicing Catholics, intelligent and cultured without being so sophisticated that they were unable to communicate with voters across States, occupations and economic classes. This alienated a number of groups and interests, especially in middle America and the south. Finally there was the likelihood, not just a threat, of a dynasty with Bobby following John and Ted following Bobby and resulting in a family rule for over two decades and all three continuing to have a powerful roles in each other’s Governments.

It is also important to remember the context in which John Kennedy came to power. Throughout the Western World the role of young people in society was changing as a consequence of economic recovery from the World War, increasing employment opportunities and improved incomes, greater mobility and travel, the development of youth culture through the music industry, increasing educational opportunities and a questioning of traditional authority and its values.

The pill was also producing a sexual revolution with the traditional role and position of females questioned and challenged. This will have appeared a great threat to traditionalists of all kinds especially those on the right, and made worse as the Kennedy’s appeared not just to speak for the new generation but endorsed their values and ideals. It also should not be forgotten that this was time when the activities of Che Guevara threatened to de-stable the business relationships with central and southern America and people like me were being effective in gaining support for a unilateral approach of what many still considered was America’s Chief allay and anti Communist defender in Europe, the UK. There were therefore many ingredients brewing to create more than one plot to kill the President. What I find difficult to understand is that the family and their advisers were not all too aware of this and did not take appropriate precautions. It is fact that for the trip to Dallas where the President was known to be disliked by Democrats supporters as well as Republicans he asked for the security to be low key and the accompanying security men were positioned inside closed vehicles travelling in front and behind and therefore had little value in terms of an attack from a distance during the journey.

For the coup d’etah to work a number of steps were required. The first was effective execution. It would illogical to rely on one shooter when the opportunity was available for others and with the best situation one which enabled triangular shots, almost simultaneously. For this to take place in Dallas the motorcade had to be diverted from along the main road into an area where shooters could placed in the School Book Depository, in another high rise building and from an open grassed bank called a knoll, on top of which was fence leading to a railway line with goods carrying containers - boxcars. As was to be demonstrated it was possible to get one or two clear shots at the President from the School Book Depository when the President was travelling along the main road before the detour of a large tree, but this was a significantly better location for three shooters and for those from the other vantage points.

The films suggests that the route was changed at the request of the plotters and they had the power to do this but I have not seen the evidence that this was If the evidence is that the route was changed shortly before the visit then it would have make planning and training for the three point attack more difficult without inside information and influence, The outline of the route appeared in the Dallas media on November 16th with more precise details on the 19th. I assume the information included times.

The evidence for there being three shooters is overwhelming and that it was immediately dismissed by the authorities once Oswald had been shot and by the Warren Commission is proof of a state and federal cover up at the highest level. My considered judgement is that too little attention has been given to the cover ups and to the premature deaths of such a large number of key individual who became identified as having important roles in the unravelling of what happened.
Fifty six peopled provided statements that the shots came from the Depository or that direction and thirty people said shots were fired from the Grass Knoll. I have not tracked down how many said the shots came from the Dal Tex Building opposite the Depository and which appears confirmed by the trajectory of a bullet which hit the curb and then wounded a bystander. It significant the Warren Commission did not interviewed some of the witnesses to the shootings and to strangers in the vicinity of the shooting. A crucial piece of evidence arise from the Zapruder film and its analysis and that of the acoustic evidence and although experts disagree this evidence points to more than one shooting point.

The second area of dispute is the number of bullets recovered and the number of injuries to the President in terms of entry and exist wounds. There is general acceptance that the President was hit by at least two bullets despite attempts to prove that one bullet, known as the magic bullet could enter, exit and re-enter the body changing direction more than once! The bystander was hit by a bullet from a different direction and the State Governor by a separate one, a belief strongly held by his widow and family in Her book - From Love Field Our Final Hours. Attempts have also been made to demonstrated that it was impossible for one shooter to have fired and reloaded and aimed the rifle used from the School Depository three times within the time frame of the recorded hits, even if an expert marksman, which Oswald was not, had been able to hit a moving target from the distance and location.

The question ought to have been settled through the report of the medical examiner who conducted the autopsy but he was told to destroy his records which he did by Federal Military and Naval men who immediately took control. The brain of the president had been removed but disappeared when it was asked to be produced for the House Special Committee.

It is not surprising that immediately the President was hit the vehicles quickly moved away to the nearest hospital and that the police and security services immediately tried to identify and apprehended anyone in the area who could have been involved

A number of individual were identified with some being held in custody for up to four days, which means they were held after Oswald was killed. At the Dal Tex Building the police found an ex convict in the building and there was also a man in a leather jacket who was considered to be acting suspiciously. One man was seen leaving the Knoll by a witness who then died in questionable circumstances. The police did arrest and detain three men who they described as travelling hobo in a box car in the rail yard behind the Knoll although other witnesses said they were well dressed and clean shaven. The police explanation was that the men had spent the previous night at a hostel in Dallas where they had showered and shaved. Amazingly the Dallas authorities lost their records of these men, their fingerprints and their photos. Later records on men detailed by the police reappeared among other thousands of other documents but these could have been created later and planted.

More attention has been given to allegation that Howard Hunt used by Nixon in Watergate and involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion when local CIA Director of operations, was said to be one the men apprehended by the police and that he was reported seen in a coat and Fedora Hat crossing over the road close to the assassination spot just after it had taken place. Hunt in his official Testimony stated that he had been in Washington on the Day. The allegations about Hunt being in Dallas had appeared in a magazine and Hunt successfully won a libel suit in which Richard Helms the CIA national director of Special Operations had given evidence along with Gordon Liddy and others. However when the judgement went to appeal it was overturned and new trial then held was lost. Then after his death his son released a taped death bed “confession.”

The tape stated CIA agents Cord Meyer, Bill Harvey and David Sanchez Morales had been directly involved in the assassination and that a French gunman had shot at Kennedy from the grass knoll. He claimed that the Vice President was behind the action.

It also emerged that one of the alleged tramps found in the box car was Frank Sturgis who like Hunt had been involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion and who Hunt named in his confessions. Sturgis was identified by a witness as the gunman on the knoll, a witness who then died in questionable circumstances.

A third individual involved was said to have been a double agent working for the CIA and the Mafia with an assignment to work in Dallas and producing fake credentials. A number of witnesses separately referred to men they encountered on the day who claimed to be State Security agents and who produced credentials but these reports did not match the locations of actual agents who were deployed on the day. However the House Select Committee on Assassinations in 1978 rejected the identifications and involvement of people such as Hunt and Sturgis.

The belief that Hunt and Strugis could have been involved gained strength because of the involvement of the CIA and the Mafia with the anti Castro Cubans in the USA and the ill fated Bay of Pigs invasion. From those who had lost relatives all way up to and including Richard Helms Director of CIA’s Special Operations who had sponsored the attack they were angered and horrified that the President had not used air cover on the day although understandably the President and his advisers would know that to have done so would have implicated his government in the assault. They were even more hostile when he ordered the abandonment of any new plans for an invasion. This in fact did not mean that he had gone soft on Cuba and it is known that some 4000 intervals were deployed to enforce and extend the economic blockade and it is known that the President and Bobby exerted pressure for the regime to be brought to an end, but without an invasion.

This is not to imply that Helms had any role in what happened in Dallas in 1963 because after falling out with Kennedy in 1962 he went off to Vietnam to overthrow President Ngo Dinh Diem. He was brought back to Washington by Lyndon Johnson who made him Deputy Director and then Director of the CIA.. Nixon took a different view about Helms who had tried to distance his agency from Watergate with some success and was then sent off to become the Ambassador to the Shah of Iran. Helms public persona became tarnished in some eyes where he was found to have lied to the Senate to protect the still secret involvement of the USA government in the attempt to stop the socialist Salvadore Allende coming to power in Chile and the subsequent successful help to de-stable and end his administration The CIA channelled millions to fund opposition groups to the populist regime. One of the noteworthy aspects of his life his life is that Helms was responsible 150 research projects designed to explore the possibilities of Mind Control and in 1972 he ordered the destruction of most of the records so that to this day the full extent of the project remains unknown, Before he died in 2002 he was able to look back on an extraordinary life studying in Switzerland where he learnt to speak fluent French and German and then working in Germany where he interviewed Hitler during the 1936 Olympics. In 1943 he joined the OSS Secret Intelligence Branch because of his ability to speak German and at 33 he was put in charge of counter intelligence in Germany Austria and Switzerland. Later it is understood he had a role in bringing Saddam Hussein into power. The Film the Good Shepherd is loosely based on his life

That the Mafia was involved directly or indirectly in the conspiracy to execute President Kennedy became one of the stronger possibilities considered by the House Special Committee who were provided information that the CIA had worked closely with the Mafia and anti Castro Cuban exiles because of their previous relationships in developing the invasion plans.

Mafia criminals Carlos Marcello from New Orleans, Sam Giacana, Johnny Roselli, Charles Nicoletti and Santo Trafficante all confirmed that they had worked with Teamsters Union President Jimmy Hoffa and the CIA on plans to assassinate Castro.

Their thanks for these efforts was that Bobby Kennedy as Attorney General dramatically increased the number of prosecutions against the crime bosses. I have previously written about the crime boss Joseph Bonanno, the subject of a four hour two part TV drama and in the book written by his Son- Bound by Honour A Mafioso’s Story there is an explanation of the long standing ties between the Mafia and anti Castro exiles in the USA and the anger with the Kennedy’s because of the Bay of Pigs failure and Bobby’s campaign. They were also angered because of their efforts to get Kennedy elected did not appear appreciated.

It was Bonanno who identified that Jack Ruby was an associate of Sam Giacana. In 2006 the FBI revealed that mobster Carlos Marcello had confessed in detail to having organised the Kennedy assassination which was immediately given credence because previously the House Committee in 1979 had stated that they believed Marcello had been involved in a Mafia conspiracy. James Files is a man serving a 30 year prison sentence for killing a policeman and he has claimed that he worked with the CIA and Johnny Roselli and Charles Nicoletti at the behest of Sam Giacana to assassinate the President.

It amazed me at the time and half the world with me that Jack Ruby had been allowed to be in such close proximity to Oswald so that he was able to shoot and kill him. However I was not subsequently surprised when Ruby successfully appealed against his conviction and sentence and that before the new trial commenced he died, allegedly of lung cancer. Ruby had been a petty juvenile offender who became involved with the Teamsters and in 1939 he was accused of being involved in the fatal shooting of the Attorney for the Union President. He was drafted into the Air Force as a mechanic in 1943 and was honourably discharged. He returned to Chicago and in 1947 moved to Dallas. In Dallas he managed strip clubs, dance halls and night clubs bribing police officers with drink and girls and narcotics. He also made trips to Cuba, involved with gamblers and Mafia boss Santo Trafficante. Jack was also a frequenter of a restaurant in Dallas run by the Campasi brothers who were Lieutenants of Carlos Marcello. The day before the assassination Ruby went to the Campasi restaurant, and he turned to the brothers for help as soon as he was arrested for killing Oswald.

There are also those who say that in fact Ruby was a relatively nobody loser and this his alleged links with the Mafia were no more than using restaurants and managing facilities frequented by police and gangsters and a situation with is universal and does not mean that everyone participating is therefore involved with each other, let alone in conspiracies to murder.

It was thought at the time of his prosecution for murder with malice that a defence of murder without malice could have been used and with it a sentence of only 5 years. Instead his defence lawyer went for legal insanity which was rejected. He was convicted and received the death sentence. After conviction Ruby attempted to give evidence to the Warren Commission which amazingly showed no immediate interest, An Alleged Mafia hitman Frank Sheeran has gone on record of staying that in a conversation with Jimmy Hoffa of the Teamsters, Hoffa said that Ruby had been told to arrange for police officers to kill Oswald and when he failed to achieve this he had no alternative but to kill the man himself before he was taken away to prison or face execution himself for the failure.

The Warren Commission did then come to interview Ruby following representations by his sister and Ruby pressed them to take him to Washington as he feared for his life. At one point he claimed in had been infected with cancer in order to silence him and that he knew who had killed the President as part of a plot to overthrow the Government. However in his final deathbed statement he said that he alone had been responsible for the killing of Oswald which can be interpreted as a factual statement that he pulled the trigger unless he added that it was done without any pressure from anyone else whatever their motives. In 1992 a film on the life of Ruby concentrated on his publicity seeking personality, his emotional volatility, his long standing association with organised crime and the police.

In JFK attention is given to Rose Cherami a 41 year old prostitute and Drug addict who was arrested on the Highway in Louisiana on November 20, in a distressed condition claiming that there was a plot to kill the President and during the period in custody she convinced Lt Francis Fruge of her concerns and then after Ruby killed Oswald she claimed that she had worked for Ruby as a stripper and he and Oswald were close and regular homosexual friends. Fruge confirmed his knowledge to the House Select Committee. In 1965 Rose was killed in a hit and run accident

It is now time to move on to the role of Lee Harvey Oswald and, the New Orleans connection and the investigation of New Orleans District Attorney and the trial of Clay Shaw for his alleged part in the assassination plot.

Lee Harvey Oswald was born in New Orleans in 1939 and before he was 18 he had lived in 22 different homes and 12 schools. He could be aggressive and was professional assessed as having a disturbed and unstable personality and is said to have been dyslexic having difficulty to spell and write coherently!

There are two views about his alleged early belief in socialism, Marxism and communism, One is that this was all baloney and that his interest was paperback trash. Despite his background he successfully enlisted in the US Marines and in 1957 he was posted to a Japan Air base where he had direct access to highly classified information, a base from where the U2 Spy planes undertook recognisance missions over the Soviet Union. He was back in the USA where in 1959 he took a proficiency test with results which were rated poor. There are different reports as whether he had taught himself or had been taught Russian. He was by then subscribing to a Communist Paper and he had continued get into trouble with fights and a demotion. It is therefore not surprising that when he falsely requested early discharge to look after his mother this was granted, He was just 19 years of age.

He used his savings to fly to France, and then after a week in England, to fly to Helsinki where he successfully applied for a Soviet visa and travelled by train overnight to Moscow.

When his first application to remain in the USSR was refused he told the US Embassy he wished to renounce his citizenship and then told the Russians he had information useful to them. A Visa to stay was granted and in the USA his record was amended from honourable discharge to undesirable. This recorded change is significant.

Although he wanted to stay in Moscow the Russians sent him to Minsk, given a job but was also subsidised to enable a life style significantly better than his colleagues with a good flat. One version is that he kept in contact with KGB during his stay while the other is that the KGB kept him under surveillance during his 34 month there

During his stay Gary Powers was shot down from a U2 plane which had set off from the air base where Oswald had been stationed. In 1961 he met and quickly married a Russian girl, Marina aged 19 years. Their first child was born 11 months later. Before the birth he applied to return to the USA with his bride and this was agreed returning to Dallas Fort Worth area in June 1962, While this was few months before the Cuban Missile Crisis relations between the USA and Russia had deteriorated. That he was allowed home at all is to say the least odd and that he was not immediately arrested and investigated for treason is extraordinary. It is known that the CIA thought his wife was a Russian Spy although she could not speak English.

Between then and working at the Book Depository it is known that Oswald had several jobs, caused problems, joined an anti Communist émigrés group and mistreated his wife.

There now comes an incident which neither film reports and which suggests that Oswald may have been more actively involved than some believe.

An attempt was made on the life of Major General Edwin Walker, an anti communist segregationist Member of the John Birch Society who was arrested and charged with insurrection, seditious conspiracy and other charges but the local grand jury refused to indict him. Later the authorities claimed that the retrieved bullet had been shot from the same riffle and was similar to two of the bullets used in the Kennedy killing. The Warren Commission conclude that he had been the attempted assassin and the US Select Committee of Assassinations stated the evidence strongly suggested that Oswald did this shooting on April 10th 1963. However it is important to draw attention that the assassin missed and that although Oswald had trained as a marksman when a service man he had just qualified.

It is my understanding that someone using Oswald’s address and signature, although with a different name purchased the rifle and the hand gun by mail order and that the hand gun was that used to kill the policeman after the Kennedy Assassination. It is odd that having gone to trouble of buy the weapons through mail order he then visited a gun dealer and had a telescopic sight fitted giving is real name and address. There is also a report of someone claiming to be Oswald having a row with a car dealer said to be at a time when he was elsewhere. Much has been made of a series of photographs including one showing Oswald with the rifle, a photo which experts say is authentic and his wife that she took the photo. Others however claim that from the shadow on the face and ground the photo could have been an amalgam with the faced of Oswald superimposed on the body

Oswald out of work yet again returned to New Orleans and was joined by his wife where he attempted to set up a branch of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, a communist body but was rejected because having no previous contact the organisation was suspicious of him. He then lost his job in New Orleans and attempted to join an anti Castro organisation and a few days after this he was handing out pro Castro leaflets. A fight let to Oswald being arrested for fighting with a Pro Castro activist.

What is then known is that while his wife returned to Dallas, Oswald took a bus to Mexico telling everyone he was on his way to Cuba before returning to the Soviet Union. He eventually obtained a Visa to Cuba, from the Mexico City embassy on October 18th after going back to Dallas on October 3rd and gaining a low paid job making the orders from at the School Books Depository on October 16th. At this time he lived in a rooming house during the week under a false name and spent weekends with his wife who was staying with friends while awaiting the birth of their second child born on October 20th. It is during this time that there is record of CIA agents visiting his wife because it is said they thought she was a Russian Spy.

On November 21st he got help from a friend for a ride into Irving, ostensibly to pick up curtain rods and returned carrying a long paper bag.

The film JFK makes much of the difficulty Oswald had in being a shooter let alone the only shooter of the President. During the morning Oswald worked with his supervisor on the sixth floor of the building and then coinciding with the period just before motorcade by he went down five flights of stairs to a rest area for his lunch where he was seen by another member of staff. He then claimed that he went up one floor to purchase a cold drink from a machine,

Within a couple of minutes of the shooting a patrolman had entered the building contacted the supervisor and they were making their way up the building when they met Oswald on the second floor and after the supervisor confirmed that he was an employed worker he was allowed to continue back downstairs with a note being made that he did not appear flustered or out of breadth,

Much has been subsequently made of the apparent fact that Oswald had to travel back upstairs from the rest room, collect the rifle from where it had been hidden, settle and prepare for the arrival of the motorcade and then fire one or more shots from the rifle, then hide the weapon on the side furthest away from the window and then calmly walk downstairs. This does not ring true about everything else that is known about the man. If he was the shootist did he manage more than one shot and did he hit the President causing the death? These are questions which will never be known.

What happened next does fit the Oswald personality but questions have also been raised. He was the only employee to leave the building and he is got on a bus and then a taxi to his lodgings when it is assumed he collected his hand gun

He was next seen by a patrolman in his vehicle 1.3K away. The vehicle stopped and the patrolman is thought to have called upon Oswald to stop whereupon Oswald fired four shots killing the officer. Still holding the weapon he continued to walk away as witnessed by a number of other individuals in the street. Oswald then made his way along the road stopping at the entrance to a shoe store and then entered the nearby Cinema Theatre without buying a ticket. He was followed by the store owner who had been listening to the radio and was suspicious of Oswald and he advised the Ticket Cashier who called the police. There was a violent struggle it which Oswald was reported to have attempted to use the weapon

District Attorney Garrison and his team behind the prosecution of Clay Shaw for his alleged involvement in the murder of the President attempts to show that the distance and time scale made it questionable that Oswald was able to reach where the police office was killed and then the Shoe shop and Theatre, By 2pm he was at the police station and shortly charged with both murders and then appeared before a local Justice of the Peace to be held for the murders. During the time at the Police station media reports had access to Oswald twice and he denied involvement in the killings.

Oswald was then interviewed at the police station by a large number of people during the next two days but no official record was made of the interviews.

At 11.21 on Sunday morning, handcuffed to an officer and with TV cameras allowed to be present in the basement of the police station to show the event live Oswald was shot to death by Jack Ruby the manager of various Dallas night places for male entertainment. Oswald‘s wife was taken into custody and eventually released with National Security Protection until her evidence to the Warren Commission. She then returned to Dallas where she remarried and still lives, Her story was the subject of a 1993 TV Film Fatal Deception.

The Executive Order and JFK films claim that Oswald was framed to be the only killer. investigated at length. Some are fantastical but plausible in the crazy world where the highest officers of state lie in the national, party political and personal interest and where the intelligence services use a wide range of individuals, some cranks and some posing as cranks.

One fantastical was explored by the British writer Michael Eddows who wrote books published in the USA and in the UK claiming that during his stay in the USA Oswald was replaced by a double who returned to the USA with Marina with the expressed intention of causing problems which led to the successful assassination attempt, This led to an exhumation of the body with the permission of his former wife in 1981 and although badly decomposed because of water penetration into the coffin, tests confirmed that the body was that of Oswald.

A 1966 FBI document revealed that the head of the KGB who was in New York at the time of the shooting was convinced the assassination had been organised and later a high ranking Soviet bloc defector described a conversation with Nicolae Ceausescu in which the former leader claimed that the Kremlin had killed or plotted to kill ten international leaders including Imre Nagy, the Shah of Iran, the Italian Palmiro Togliatti and President Kennedy. He provided details of the plot to kill Mao Zadong naming Lin Biao of the KGB and that everyone in his circle was convinced the KGB was involved in the assassination of Kennedy. Retired senior CIA officer Cord Meyer had stated that the CIA had learnt from a defector that the KGB had organised the assassination out of revenge for the Cuban missile crisis. The problem is that Cord himself was also named as possible conspirator in the killing of the President.

While the idea that a Soviet planted double was killed by Ruby has been exploded, the existence of a look alike gained credence when it was revealed that in a memo written before the killing J Edgar Hoover stated that an impostor appeared to be using Oswald’s personal details. This confirms that he had a relationship or was under surveillance of the FBI in addition to his admitted involvement with the CIA, This aspect was covered in a 1996 book -The Second Oswald by Professor Richard H Popkin but the allegations have been countered by the evidence on handwriting and the photograph.

In 1995 a former US Army intelligence Officer and then an assistant with the National Security Service published evidence that both the CIA and the FBI had deliberately tampered with their records about Oswald and they withheld information which could have alerted authorities that he posed a threat to the President. He subsequently named someone he thought was a key figure in the killing. Separately a former CIA officer David Atlee Phillips was said to also be Maurice Bishop who worked with an organisation of anti Castro Cubans called Alpha 66 and its founder claimed that at meetings with Phillips, Oswald was also present.

The notion that the CIA had been involved was enhanced by the findings of the House Select Committee. In concluding that there had been a conspiracy to kill the President, the Committee expressed surprise and concern that the Security Service had not provided adequate protection in Dallas, or analysed, investigated and used information in their possession which could have led to proving better security on the trip. It was usual to sweep the area before the visit and post armed agents on roof tops and other vantage tops on the look out for snipers and others behaving suspiciously Recent employees of buildings alongside the roof or buildings where the public had ease fo access would have been given special attention. The House Committee also drew attention that the President had asked that his security be discrete and in the film Executive Action this fact was reported to the conspiracy organisers in Texas as adding to the opportunity which the visit provided them to make the kill.

It is now appropriate to deal with the inquiries of New Orleans District Attorney which led to the trial of the cultured influential and alleged homosexual businessman Clay Shaw charged with conspiracy to murder the President. On November 25th a New Orleans lawyer Dean Andrews Jnr, the day after Ruby killed Oswald, contacted the FBI to say that on the day of the shooting he had been contacted by a man calling himself Clay Barnard asking if he would defend Oswald. Something about which Mr Andrews then gave evidence to the Warren Commission.

Later in the month a New Orleans private investigator, Jack Martin made claims this one of his colleagues, David Ferrie was involved in the assassination. Ferrie was reported to be working for a lawyer retained by the New Orleans Mafia boss. The matter was investigated by District Attorney Garrison but not progressed although Garrison remained concerned and read the whole of the Warren Commission publications and was struck by inconsistencies and many unanswered questions. He decided to reopen the investigation and instructed his staff to give the matter their full attention.

Earling Carothers Garrison, known as Jim, became convinced of a local conspiracy behind the killings which must have had links with the security services, the military, government and business. Some continue to believe that he attempted to connect coincidences and hindsight into a conspiracy without evidence, some thought that although he had the fundamentals of what had happened he failed in the task, while others that he was himself the victim of a cover up stretching down from the federal Government.

Garrison did not believe he had the evidence to convict Clay Shaw who he believed was Clay Barnard, a man with links to the CIA, and with Ferrie who in turn had links with Oswald and in JFK. Garrison was persuaded by an unknown high level and informed official from Washington to go to a trial before further action is stopped. This man reminds of Deep Throat, the informant in the uncovering of Watergate and the resignation of Richard Nixon who had been defeated by Kennedy. The informant tells Garrison that he is closer to the truth than he realises and that by go to trial with his assessment of the full story, it could persuade others to come forward and break the cover up conspiracy.

After starting his investigation Garrison was contacted by a serving prisoner, a male prostitute who claimed that he had heard former Catholic student Priest Ferrie discussing the proposed coup d’etah with a man he knew as Clay Barnard when attending homosexual parties at his home. He was able to described the internal contents of the home including having a meal sitting at one end of a long table with the meal served by a liveried waiter

Clay Barnard is identified as Clay Shaw but on interview Shaw denies this, denies being a homosexual and of knowing Ferris or the convict Willie O Keefe or being involved with the CIA.

Clay Shaw was discharged from the army in 1946 having served in the war with the General staff and was decorated by three nations -. the USA France and Belgium. After the war he returned to his home town and established a Trades centre for the sale of domestic and imported goods, He became an important figure in the community, known for his charitable work and for trying to preserve buildings in the French Quarter.

The centrepiece of the Shaw Trial was the testimony of Perry Russo who claimed that he and attended a party with Oswald, Ferrie and Clay Barnard who he identified in court as Clay Shaw. He said this group had discussed killing Kennedy. The problem with this testimony is a that a note of meeting between Russo and a staff member of the District Attorney indicated that while he had met Shaw twice it was not at the party. Another witness who said he had met Clay Barnard at a building owned by Shaw and who had admitted to him being the leading citizen was discredited as being paranoid.

Also at the Trial was Guy Bannister, a career member of the FBI who set up a private investigation team, He was a outspoken anti Communist, a member of the Minutemen and the John Birch Society and the Louisiana Committee on Un-American Activities, a leading figure in Anti Castro activities including the Operation Mongoose where the CIA used 4000 individuals to undermine the Cuban economy in every and anyway. Bannister was said to be running a training camp for Cuban Exiles although most of these allegation could not be proved.

Jack Martin lived in New Orleans and worked with Guy Bannister as a Private investigator and blew the whistle on Banister and David Ferrie, Martin was really Edward Suggs with a long history of coming to the attention of the police for impersonating them and disturbing the peace as well as performing illegal abortions.

Ferrie had trained to become a Catholic Priest but was dismissed after taking boys to a brothel and other misdemeanours. He subsequently became a pilot but lost his job in 1961 after being twice arrested on moral charges. He then went to work for Guy Banister who he had come to know previously because of similar political interests, He was an outspoken anti communist and also started to work with the right wing Cuban exile Sergio Arcacha Smith head of the CIA backed Cuban Revolutionary Front in New Orleans and in early 1962 his office was in the same building of his friend Guy Banister Ferrie and Smith were directly involved in a raid on ammunitions depot in Louisiana from which weapons, grenades and ammunition was taken. Ferrie took up invitations to speak to civic groups on political issues and he launched such a tirade against Kennedy that he was asked to leave the podium when addressing the Military Order of World Wars. Ferrie and Banister worked for New Orleans Mafia Boss Carols Marcello at one point in an attempt to block his extradition back to Guatemala. It is claimed Ferrie flew Marcello to the USA from Guatemala, It was said the a deal was made in which Marcello would make substantial donations to the anti Castro movement in return for concession in Havana when Castro was overthrown.

November 22 1963 was a day when Bannister was in a great mood because Marcello was acquitted in the deportation case and Kennedy had been killed. Martin who had been drinking with his boss was shocked by the openness of what Bannister was saying that the two got into an argument and Bannister pistol whipped Martins resulting in his having to taken to Hospital. Among the issues which Martin then brought to the attention of Garrison was that Ferrie had revealed to him plans to kill Kennedy and that Ferrie’s ability as a pilot was to be used in the getaway after the killing, Martin thought it was Ferrie who had taught Oswald to use a rifle with a telescopic lens Martins went on a search for photographs showing that Ferrie and Oswald had an association going back to the time when Ferrie was adult member and Oswald a youth member of the Local Civil Air Patrol group,

A photograph was located showing the two at the same eat out with others. Ferrie in turn commenced his own follow up visiting Oswald’s landlady and a former neighbour to scotch a report that Oswald had Ferrie’s Library card in his possession when arrested, Martins also made other allegations including that Ferrie had hypnotised Oswald, This is not as fanciful as it seems taking account that within five years the head of the CIA had ordered the destruction of the records of the secret 150 research projects into Mind control which the CIA had been funding.

Garrison became convinced that Bannister, Ferrie and Shaw had been actively involved in the plot to kill the President and that Oswald had been selected as the fall guy. Less than a week after the New Orleans State’s Item newspaper broke the news of the Garrison investigation in 1969, Ferrie was found dead at home. The cause of death was said to be natural but two suicide notes were also found. The day the story broke Ferrie had telephoned a Garrison aide to say that the publicity meant he was a dead man. Garrison was convinced Ferrie was murdered

Ferrie had denied knowing Oswald but six witnesses stated that Oswald had attended meetings of the Civil Air Patrol which Ferrie then headed. In 1978 a young FBI informant also claimed that Ferrie and Oswald continued to be in contact and that Sergio Smith knew Oswald,

The former Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director of the CIA said that Ferrie was connected to the CIA with involvement in Cuban activities.

Sergio Smith had moved to Texas from New Orleans before the trial and the Governor of Texas refused the request from Garrison that Smith be extradited back to New Orleans to give evidence at the trial of Clay Shaw,

As other witnesses were discredited it was not surprising that the Jury took only an hour to find Clay Shaw not guilty. Shaw maintained his lack of knowledge and contact with everyone mentioned and that he had an involvement with the CIA. In 1979 Richard Helms testified under oath that Clay had been one of the 150000 businessmen, journalists and others who had been contracted, that is paid by the CIA for their services and that Clay’s role had been to provide information on his visits abroad, mostly in Latin America.

Clay Shaw died in 1975 aged 61 from alleged natural causes with no autopsy performed. In the Final Report of the House Select Committee it was concluded that the Committee was inclined to believe that Oswald had been in the company of Ferrie, if not also Clay Shaw during the three months before the assassination and that witnesses at the trial had established an association between the three men without proving what that association was about.

I have to make the point that it would not be surprising that in the circles of the Mafia, the Cuban Exiles and Right wing fanatics who hated Kennedy there would be kudos in being thought to have played a part in the killing, just as those who the CIA used in their operations in relation to Cuba may well have overplayed their role and significance whereas those who were more directly involved in the plot or worked closely with CIA especially from ideals and patriotism would have taken steps guard against their involvement being made public or risking the position of other.

(For the record in JFK Tommy Lee Jones played Shaw, and Kevin Costner Garrison, Garry Oldman played Oswald who met Marina and her two daughters as part of preparations for his role. Kevin Bacon played Willie O Keefe teh convict. Jack Lemon Jack Martin, Sissy Spacek Garrison‘s wife and Donald Sutherland the Washington mystery man.

There have been several works concentrating on the role of Oswald including three films using the device of a trial. In 1986 London weekend Television carried out an unscripted trial over 21 hours in length using real lawyers and a real Judge).

One of less known conspiracies has been promoted by a veteran police officer Craig Roberts in his book - Kill Zone 1994 and Jim Marris in his Book Crossfire. These argued the killing had been organised by those hostile to Executive action taken by the President allegedly related to his approach towards maintaining the Federal reserves

I cannot end without making reference to the clam made by Garrison at the Trial and in the film that Texan Vice President Lyndon B Johnson was responsible or at best had prior knowledge of the plot and took no action to prevent the killing.

In addition to the claims of Howard Hunt previously reported the major allegation comes from a mistress of the Vice President who with an employee of Clint Murchison Texan Oil Magnate. She claimed that LBJ attended a dinner at the Murchison’s mansion shortly before the assassination after which LBJ is alleged to have told his mistress that the Kennedy‘s will never embarrass him again. In 2003 a book was published by Barr McClellan called Blood Money and Power. How LBJ killed JFK. The book claims that the motive was that Johnson was to be dropped as Vice President in the 1964 elections, and that he wanted to have the power to cover scandals about himself. It argues that he was assisted by his friend and attorney Edward Clark and that a smudged fingerprint found at the Depository belonged to a Johnson associate who had undertaken the shooting and that the operation had been financed by Texan oil magnates including Murchison and one name other. Claims of the leadership in the plot by Oil magnates was a key aspect of the film Executive Action. When the book was used for a TV series on the Men who Killed Kennedy shown on the History Channel the family of LBJ and his former Aides made representations and it was subsequently agreed not to show the programme again. It could be argued that the Johnson reversal of the Kennedy approach to Vietnam and his decisions on Richard Helms adds to the conspirator beliefs about his role

There is also the contrasting record on domestic matters after he gained power in his own right in 1964.It is one of the vest records of the 20th century with signing legislation which upheld civil rights, introduced Medicare and Medicaid, furthered environmental protection and promoted education as well as programmes to help the poor. He laid the foundation for fundamental changes which have brought President Obama into Office forty years later.

I would like to believe that if these is some form of self aware conscious being after physical death, the three Kennedy brothers now look onto Obama’s America with broad satisfied smiles on their faces. However I fear more those with a continuing hatred of the 20th century enlightenment and which will have deepened with the election of President Obama.

1812 Crime and Punishment: Criminal Justice, Murder by Numbers , the 4400

On every weekday evening last week at 9pm on BBC Channel One there was the showing of the second drama in the series Criminal Justice which I delayed watching until this weekend using the i player. The first series was BAFTA award wining and although this series was a different story with different actors I quickly understood why so much critically acclaim had been given. I have not previously experienced such an intense in depth and complex portrayal of human behaviour relationships over a five hour period. It was at times unwatchable yet I could not, and did not, want to stop doing so.

Throughout the outcome was uncertain although the tone was such that the audience became prepared for something which left one unhappy and angry. While the writers were unequivocally hostile to the male dominated Criminal Justice system where tribal relationships and prejudices dominated, the main target appeared to be a system which parted good parenting mothers from their children. In this respect the programme was fundamentally flawed because too often children have been kept with damaged and dangerous mothers as well as with damaged and dangerous men, accepting that the record of fostering and the residential care system in the UK is also open to serious and justified criticism. However there is a difference between well trained and experienced people making the wrong decisions and situations where incompetence, prejudice and failure to provide appropriate resources prevails.

In this drama an abused and overpowered woman kills her husband in a flash of despair and the whole weight of the criminal justice system turns on her because her husband was a highly regarded prosecutor and she had become isolated without friends or allies. There is no doubt that had not a solicitor with the qualifications to represent in court as junior council to a brilliant young female barrister then the woman would have been convicted of murder and the child removed from her after its birth and placed into care and possibly for adoption. This is the everyday reality and happens with considerable justification rather because of prejudice although resource issues will be an important factor.

In fairness there were two men in the programme who could and eventually did make a difference to the outcome, a police detective inspector who eventually provided information which was crucial to getting the woman to say in public what had been happening to her, although despite having major doubts he was [previously pushed by a junior colleague to lying to the court to protect him and it was the colleague also a police detective, who decided to admit the truth and raise doubts about an important aspect of her husband’s evidence. The senior officer was interesting because he had worked for five years catching paedophiles with a certainty until one case had created doubts that all was not as clear cut as he had believed. He had significant doubts in this case and redeemed himself towards the end.

The other male was the family GP and family friend and someone who had crucial evidence which he failed to come forward not because medical ethics but because doing so threatened his professional future, his marriage and family life. When push comes to shove most people will protect themselves and their interests. For some people only society through its institutions and the employment of good people can provide protection and care and when that fails the society in question is doomed, and rightly so. Fortunately, largely under the influence of his wife he came forward with the truth.

The brilliance of this drama is that is shows that individuals are more complex than usually portrayed, behaviour which can appear reprehensible can arise from good motives and just how difficult it is for outsiders called into domestic tragedies to determine the true nature of what is happening and risks and implications of the different courses of action that are possible,

Early on in the first of the five episodes we learn that the couple live in a white, minimalist, obsessively clean and tidy home, that the husband is a top notch highly regarded criminal prosecutor who is training to run in the London Marathon for charity and that the wife is feeling particularly guilty about a secret outing with the suggestion that she has had a lover. The husband appears to have an unusually close almost conspirator relationship with his teenage daughter and the mother also has a close and warm relationship with her child. Thus what I suspected was a red herring, the possibility that father was sexually assaulting his daughter was introduced. We know that at night the girl listened to audio books when in bed but she also listened and sometimes observed what was happening in the bedroom of her parents and had done so on the evening when her mother left the marital bed and went into the kitchen and selected one of three kitchen knives and admits to having inserted and left the knife in her husband and then left the house wearing a coat, disposing a jar of Vaseline in a street waste bin before sitting on a bench and then going to the hospital where she is apprehended by the police and taken to a police station.

It is the teenage daughter who finds her stabbed father and removes the knife and then attempts to stem the blood flow while talking to 999. This fact understandably governs the attitude of the police when they are immediately required to investigate and determine if a crime was committed and if so who committed it. The debate posed in the series is whether it is also the responsibility of the police is also ask why and if they obtain answers which mitigate the crime, to then provide that information to those employed to protect the interests of the accused of being crime perpetrators. Such programmes usually forget to mention that the prosecuting authorities do have discretion about whether most crimes should come to court. Many offences which could be tried in the criminal courts are never investigated because they are not reported. Is a bank clerk who steals £10000 from his employer more likely to be prosecuted than one who defrauds several millions? The managers of the same bank may take a different view depending on the individual and the circumstances and whether the loss has become or is likely to become public or not.

The police only investigate a proportion of reported offences and they have powers to caution if the offence is admitted in a whole range of situations. The state, the Crown Prosecution service has the power to decide that it is not in the public interest to prosecute and this covers a range of situations and offences. The nature of the charges is also a matter for the police and for the Crown Prosecution service. Then there is question of the decision to remand in custody or bail, including placement in a bail hostel and whether the case is tried at a Magistrates or Crown Court and whether there is a Jury or not. Is the individual represented by a solicitor or barrister in court Obviously in a single drama most of these issues cannot be covered which is where the five episode series has the advantage, especially if shown on a daily basis. The brilliance of the drama is that is made no attempt to simplify and for every position or issue provided different perspectives, explanations and possible outcomes.

I will not attempt to cover all the issues raised or present the chronology of the series but concentrate on some aspects which were of interest to me. The main one as already mentioned was the question of should someone who admits to manslaughter or murder or a crime not directly related to children, be allowed to be with and keep a child born while in custody and during a long period of prison. Is it right for the child which must be the first consideration. If the woman commits a murder in cold blood, has planned and calculated the crime and attempted to cover up, should she ever be allowed to have the care of any children again, especially her own. Even if the murder was calculated was it provoked. There world has become familiar with the case where a man imprisoned his own daughter for sexual reasons for over a decade and then kept the children he had fathered also imprisoned. She may well have known that only by a murderous act could she obtain freedom for her children let alone herself and that this might have taken time and planning? Should this be judged different from an act of the moment, the crime of passion?

In the film the woman was kept in custody throughout most of her pregnancy and the for a time after the birth of the child so there had been plenty of time to bring forward the trial or arrange for the provision of a place in a mother and baby unit within the prison system as well as to investigate the long term position for any baby and any other children. Only in relation to her daughter and newborn child was the situation appropriately investigated and prepared for and something of the background study and collective consideration portrayed on screen. Prejudice and personal inclinations can and probably always do have a part in decisions made by one individual about another but should and are usually countered by appropriate training and supervision and management. The film attempted to show this is so.

The second issue was how the mother was put into the position of making statements and admissions without the presence of a solicitor to protect her interests. She was tricked by a particular police officer, colluding with others with the promise of being able to see her daughter who was also at the police station as rightly the police had to first establish who had knifed the father and it could have been the daughter if she was being sexually assaulted and the mother may have been trying to cover up for her. I was reminded that in the Almodovar film Volver the father is killed by the step daughter resisting rape, and mother then buries the body and the crime is successfully covered up and the issue while precipitating the film story is not the main subject. In this series the male detective wants to ensure someone who he believes committed calculated murder, abandoning her teenage daughter to deal with the situation, a situation where had the daughter left the knife in the body, where in some instances because of legal and social representations a custodial sentence is not given and the individual is allowed to carry on as before there could have been a greater chance of survival, will stretch the position of every police officer and face teh temptation of wanting and being able to bend the rules.. A brilliant aspect of the drama was to show that the killed man had more common with the police detective than the detective was able to see let alone admit to, although this became something which his wife came to recognise.

The third aspect was the behaviour of the Family GP who provided a home for the teenage daughter when the disaster first occurred but then insisted that the girl be allowed to remain in the home long after her presence seriously began to affect their own daughter and their marriage, yet rejected foster caring the baby which he knew was his own son. The acting of the daughter, GP and his wife and their daughter was of a very high quality and the dialogue of the highest order in terms of authenticity and credibility. It was not just that individuals were unwilling to talk about their true thoughts and feelings because of the potential consequences but they were unable to understand or express themselves such is the nature of shock and the trauma, T S Elliot I believe wrote the line in one of his plays that human being cannot stand or cope with too much reality to which he could and probably did add, especially of themselves. Contemporary society needs people to function without continuous analysis and introspection. Faced with helping a friend and patient and then the woman who was bearing his child after an impulsive sexual act which she had initiated he was torn between conflicting emotions and interests. A parallel drama could have been created out of his story and that of his wife and teen daughter and the police and the authorities could have become just as judgemental about his behaviour as they did about the wife who killed her husband. His wife on insisting that he volunteer the truth to the court and the husband in doing so showed great courage which I suspect in practice is not always the position. The consequences would be dramatic and traumatic for all three members of the family and of no less a scale than on the wife and daughter who were the main subjects of the series.

The outcome? It emerged that the husband and used his daughter to help in the control of his wife although there was no attempt to explain why he had behaved in this way and which was a major flaw in the production. Who speaks for this man? The clerk in chambers attempted to do so, a man with his own past whose parents had saved him from holocaust and who had come to love his boys, as he called the barristers in the Chamber and the deceased in particular. There was the hint that the relationship may have had a different basis given that the husband did not appear to want normal intercourse but one object was to emphasise the many possibilities or every action. The defence, understandably seized upon the fact that the clerk had given the barrister a large amount of cash and that the a barrister on his run had stopped to talk to a group of youngsters who were under surveillance of the drug squad and that the barrister had been found with a £20 pound note in his possession from one of the young men. The explanation is that the clerk had drawn the money as sponsorship for the a barrister undertaking the marathon to raise money for a cancer charity of which the Clerk was suffering. The minor drug pusher had given the money as sponsorship having come to know the barrister from his training runs. The police had made sure the defence had the basics of this information in order to mud sling and therefore raise doubts about their defence just as the defence was able to reveal that the detective had lied to the court about the way the confession has been obtained without the presence of a lawyer. So all was not as it seemed. When the mother begins to talk in court about why she did what she did and did not attempt to explain why before and there is a reconciliation with her daughter after the revelation that she had originally intended to kill herself rather than her husband but everything had changed with the pregnancy and the birth of her second child the audience is led to believe that the outcome will be a good one.

Then the judge after the jury had found her not guilty of murder, a verdict with which he agreed, sentenced her to five years in jail towards the maximum of the scale which could have seen her released under supervision in the community. He was not only punishing her but the daughter who needed her mother and the recently born half brother. He limited the earliest day of release to two and half years, a year longer than the time when a mother is allowed to keep a child with her in prison. Although the woman had become a product of her husband’s needs and power, she had nevertheless killed him, she had left the daughter to cope in a situation where unintentionally the action of the daughter had contributed to her father’s death, she had given different answer to different people about the risk of injuring herself which in turn raised concerns for the future of the child The justice of the sentence was open to debate.

In the sixth defined episode of the 40400 hundred I felt the series had come of age and that however derivative its concept it was executed in excellent fashion and had been unpredictable whereas the previous one had. None of the three episodes of the second disk of season, however, came Criminal Justice nor did Sandra Bullock, as a creative disturbed and driven detective controlled by her past in the film Murder by Numbers. This writing could be called three degrees of detection seriousness, two of them criminal.

The third episode of the second disk of the second season of the 4400 (Life Interrupted) stands out because it while it features Tom and his son, Shaun, his young brother and girl friend, their parents, Tom’s ex wife and Homeland security agent Diana, it is not about the 4400 directly. Tom is at the 4400 headquarters for the funeral of Jordan Collier when he is called to the room when the body had been laying in state only to find that it had disappeared. How Jordan Collier came to die was the subject of the previous episode. When Tom returns to the home where he and his son live he is immediately struck by the warmth of his son and when he returns to the office of the 4400 investigation Unit he finds everything normal except the 4400 has not existed and he is welcomed back after being on sick leave after an underground operation where he had been caught, imprisoned and tortured, followed by rescue, a period in hospital and sick leave for recovery. He has little time to work out what has happened when the unit is called to the Collier centre which is the same building but now an arts centre, because of a suspect reported in the building. Jordan Collier is just not dead but the state governor although he does not appear in the episode which one suspects is a clue of some kind. In the chase around the building Tom is separated from his colleagues and thinks he has seen a man enter a room which unlike all the others in the building which have solid wood doors, has a round window through which he looks and cannot enter when he tries to do so. His colleagues enter and apprehend the suspect. The door had become like all the others and room bears no relationship with that Tom had seen although we the audience had only obtained a fleeing glimpse.

When Tom returns home he finds his family and friends have gathered for a return to work party. In addition to his son being the fun loving student, his cousin Shaun is there, his younger brother and his beautiful, intelligent wife, Alana, who we subsequently learn owns an art gallery in the city centre. We learn that Tom is on good relations with his ex wife and her second husband and has a satisfying life as part of a good middle America urban community. When he persists that this is all unreal to him, the same words used by his son when he came out of the coma, his partner Diana traps him into a situation where he is then taken off to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.

It is at this point his “wife“ admits that she too is a returnee who has no recollection of him or his life and is just as distressed and perplexed about her present situation which appears to be a parallel reality much explored in the Star Trek and Dr Who series. They agree to cooperate with the medical and other authorities so that Tom can return home and together they can work out what has happened to them. This appears to work and two establish a good relationship which over two years develops into a loving an close one and what had been the charade of their marriage becomes an important reality. At one point Tom returns to the building and enters the room with teh glass window in its door and finds a corpse laying on a medical type table at the centre, in a room reminiscent of the second concert hall at the Sage which is circular with several narrow balconies. However this room is dark and stark and there are showy individuals standing looking down and for some reason I think of The Way to the Stars, although I may have got the film title wrong. Just when he is about to uncover the body on the table the room shatters and he finds himself in the room which existed when he first entered and remained when he had returned. For several days and weeks subsequently he returns to the centre to keep watch on the door hoping the mystery of what had happened has been revealed but as the relationship with his “wife” develops and he has the warmth and strength of his family and work colleagues around him he and his wife accept their situation and the episode jumps eight further years as they renew their marriage vows and go off on a honeymoon with all their friends and family at the ceremony, including his son who has become a doctor. He is set to become the new regional director of the Homeland security unit.

It is at this point he returns to the centre and finds the room and is able to enter and to remove the cover from the face of the body on the table and discovers it is that of his wife. He learns that all that he has experienced over past decade has happened in an instant and was intended to provide him strength for the challenge of coping with the 4400 and their purpose in the years ahead and that the way to break out of the dimension is for both to accept that this is unreality and end what is in effect a prolonged dream. However because they can now control their experience they bring together their family and friends to announce they have decided to extend their trip which is something they had been wanting to do for sometime but wanted to say goodbye and as they do they eliminate the present reality person by person and local community and home. He returns to his office and find it is back to the time of the 4400 and the challenges which they pose. He has just missed a returnee whose form he recognises and runs after her not only to find that it is the woman who has been his wife for eight years in his mind but she knows who he is and they embrace and we believe he is to have the love and support in reality which those who had unlocked the powers of the 4400 said he needed to help fulfil their mission. However I could find no reference to his wife and the actress who played her in the Wikipedia notes on the episode.

This episode contrast with the previous two in which Richard‘s wife Lily turns to her former husband a lawyer, for help when Richard is taken into custody for his failure to register as a 4400 living in the community. This leads him to Jordan Collier who comes a calling, and begs the couple and their child to return. Jordan has revealed that prior to trying to stop Richard and his wife taking the child away from the centre he had been full of personal ambition, power and the wealth of the situation but although the child and threatened his life when he had touched Lily, he had been fundamentally changed and become focussed on the mission. He wanted them to come back and participate in the mission freely and he wanted contact with the child again because he believed his present life would be validated. This turns out to be so and Jordan become a grandfather/uncle in their life and that of the child. Everything continues to go well as the time of great reunion approaches when the returnees will assemble from all parts oft he world.

It is as this point that Maia has a prediction about Jordan who she sees on TV, he is to die. Diana and Tom first persuade their boss that it is important to try and intervene and then persuade Collier that he needs to take greater precautions and allow them to his help protect him and try and prevent what so far has been the inevitability of Maia’s predictions. In this respect they are supported by Shaun who argues that Jordan becoming a martyr would place the Mission in jeopardy and Jordan himself is ambivalent about what to do, agreeing that the unit and Tom and Diana can enter the 4400 complex centre and take control of security. They would still like the reunion postponed

Jordan decides to consult the child of Lily and Richard and while we do not immediately learn the outcome, Jordan believes that he should continue and that everything will work out well. For a time this also appears to be likely outcome as one major suspect is apprehended having come close to achieving the assassination. Then Jordan is shot from a vantage point outside the building where the main reunion ceremony is taking place, a flaw because in the real word this possibility would have been taken into account and he would have been moved to a position in the building where an external shooting could not occur. (Have you not noted the way Parliamentary building chambers are designed, The Houses of Commons and Lords, the Senate and Congress Houses and the UN building in New York. Although Shaun attempts to revive , Jordan, he is declared dead.

I suggest that no one is surprised that the body then disappears leaving the way open for a resurrection, reminding of Bobby Ewing in Dallas, nor is anyone surprised when we learn that the shootist, reminiscent of the shooting of President Kennedy also in Dallas, is none other than Tom’s son. This is not et tu Brutus but Judas.

The son and Shaun’s cousin have become increasingly aggressive towards the 4400, attacking everyone and everything associated with the returnees, especially Jordan and his chief assistant Shaun, with Kyle resentful and afraid of his ability to lose time and find himself transported from one situation into another and without memory of what has occurred in the intervening period.

Shaun also remains troubled as his commitment to the mission of the 4400 grows. He is challenged by a group of young misfits, drugs addicts, petty criminals surviving by voluntary hand outs and prostitution, living in the shadow of the city, in the first upside on teh disk, Suffer the children, a continuing problem in the Sates but which has been largely eliminated in the UK by in effect Government and police action supported by the establishment of refuges by independent bodies funded by voluntary contributions and government funds.

Shaun encounters one of these groups gate crashing a ceremony in which the guests are provided free food and he takes an interest in a young woman of similar age to himself and to her plight and those of her friends, donating food, blankets and medical supplies. Jordan warns against revealing his healing powers because to do so to one and all will seek help and it is not practical for him to heal everyone. However he responds to a call from the girl when her boyfriend appears to be a bad drugs trip and Shaun cures him with the consequence as Jordan predicted all the down and outs want his help. This leads to the girl being disillusioned with Shaun who has become her hero and potential saviour. He persuades her to enter the 4400 which does, we suspect not out of conviction but to get close to him. Unfortunately Jordan has been assassinated and Shaun has to take over the role of leader and becomes too busy with too great responsibilities to have a personal relationship and symbolically the doors to his office are closed to her as she approaches him having progressed within the 4400 process of enlightenment. The scene reminds when Corleone’s son becomes the Godfather.

The main focus of Suffer not Little Children is a returnee teacher accused of child abuse by some parents at her school because some of children have been changed dramatically for the good while others have not. She explains she has been able to recognise the untapped potential in many of the children, some creatively in playing a musical instrument, painting and sculpture with others in more traditional scholastic subjects but not all. One particular father and one pupil becomes very aggressive towards her and getting her removed from the school. When Tom and Diana investigate they are satisfied with the explanation of her power and she is returned to the school with protection but too late to prevent the most disturbed pupil from entering her class with a gun, not to kill in her but to persuade her to change him so his father will be proud The father has become the town failure the teacher explains that not everyone has untapped talent which can be immediately recognised and transformed this does not mean the boy will turn out like his father and does not find contentment through his work and relationships in the future. It is the father who persuades his son to hand the gun over and it is time for the teacher to move to an environment where her abilities will be appreciated and use to their potential.

So much of the second season second disk has been constructive and optimistic but there are warnings. The consequence of first husband assisting in getting Richard out of jail has led to problems with his second wife and to her first daughter overhearing and discovering that her first mother is alive and going in search and making contact. However when she has contact with her half sister there is a discordant note and later when she returns home she becomes seriously ill so the first husband makes contact with her mother when the danger is over for her visit in hospital, Do we detect jealousy and a child who requires the exclusive attention of her parents? There is also pressure on Diana and daughter Maia. The child continues to wrestle with her powers and wish to be normal while discovering that she is having further visionary predictions, Homeland Security subpoenas their employee to surrender the diary. Why did the baby tell Jordan he would be safe if he went ahead with the Reunion? One would like more answer and to know more those returnee who pass by only in one episode

All is revealed and settled in Murder by Numbers which is at times a harrowing film about a police detective played by Sandra Bullock who as the films progresses we learn married at sixteen to a man who became jealous and violent towards and when she decides to stand up to him and tells him she is leaving him for good he stabs her over a dozen times and dumps her body in the countryside alive but dying. Fortunately she is discovered and rescued and survives scarred in body and in mind towards men. She is asked to attend a parole hearing when her husband is being considered for release but her response is to dent the situation and her past. However it dominates her life in other ways, as she engages in casual sex with her male detective colleagues appointed her partners but then falls out with them, picking fights so they reject her and refuse to continue working with her. This is both an emotional and physical response to what happened to her, unwilling to show her scarred body.

This is the background to a horrific murder of a young woman which has the hallmarks of being a random unplanned killing and then the work of the high school janitor who conveniently commits suicide as the police close in. However Sandra is not convinced and suspects the involvement of two student who pretend not to be friends within the school environment but who meet, debate and plot at a disused house on a cliff top.

The first of the two young men is the intellectual with a perverted interest in forensic science so her talks of undertaking the perfect murder in which all clues to the perpetrator are removed and someone else is framed leaving the usual links which killers who commit crimes of the moment will leave of themselves. However he is a loner who thinks but does not act. His conspirator is the doer, the rich kid who has everything including the means to buy what is needed to create a sterile environment to hold and kill the victim, to plant the clues on someone else.

It is not just good enough for the two to commit a crime which remains unsolved. They must be involved with the detection leading to the identification and conviction of the chosen perpetrator. To achieve the this they leave the footprint of a particular expensive designer trainers which the investigatory team are able to trace to the super rich kid student. He demonstrates that it was stolen and has been reported to the college and to the police. The trainers are found in the possession of the janitor who is shown to be the supplier of drugs to the school.

But the first mistake is that at the scene of thee crime the thinker throws up having had a caviar starter at the expensive restaurant in the area, and which the detectives are able to trace that the student had eaten there on a regular basis and on the night in question. Assuming this was practical, the young man given the brilliance and extent of knowledge about forensic science would not have left his throwing up in the vicinity of the site. This is a plot flaw although by then both perpetrators had become emotionally caught up by what they had done.

This young man is helped by a female student in exchange for help with one of her subjects and this leads to inviting her to see his collection fo rare and beautiful flowering plants. She is impressed and they kiss, a kiss observed by ‘the doer’ who then not only seduces the girl but films the experience to reveal to his friend that the girl is not a worthy companion. The two young men are not true friends as such but comrades in the deadly enterprise. The incident with the girl builds a wedge between the two and when they meet up which was against their detailed plan Sandra is there observing with her camera to hand and this reignites the willingness of her latest detective partner and their boss to pursue what had become an open and shut case. Gradually the net closes and the two men fall out, the doer trying to blame the other and then force him into a one sided suicide pact. The thinker works this out in time just as Sandra arrives, having radioed in she has located the pair she pursues them without waiting for her colleagues to arrive. This fits into her personality and leads nearly to her death in a melodramatic last sequence in which she and the doer wrestle on a veranda at the Cliff edge and eventually he does crashed to his doom and she is saved by the thinker who then pleads for his life claiming that the other committed the murder and that he had saved her life should be taken into consideration. She nearly buys this but then in a second dodgy moment she released that the when the doer had tried to strangle her he had left a mark from his signet ring on her neck and the murder victim did not have such a mark. The is unbelievable crass on the assumption that if the audience had gone along with the premise of the plot they would not yell out that given the care taken with the crime he would have removed the ring before strangling the girl. This however enables her to trick the surviving murderer into admitting his guilt and Sandra then observes that whatever one does or does not do in life one should and needs to face the consequences and no one will be able t run away indefinitely. (A very questionable statement indeed) This leads Sandra to accepting she has also to face what happened to her and to attend the parole hearing. She has found the redemption she had been locking for the sense of guilt and horror experienced. It is therefore a fundamentally flawed albeit clever film made above average by the performance of Sandra Bullock.

The film is based on a true story unlike Criminal Justice and the 4400.Nathan Freudenthal Leopold and Richard Albert Loeb were two wealthy Chicago University students who murdered 14 year old Bobby Franks in 1924. The murder was an attempt to commit the perfect crime. One had written to the other A superman is, on account of certain superior qualities inherent in him, exempted from he ordinary laws which govern men. He is not liable for anything he may do. The two students 18 and 19 years of age had planned to become lawyers. They were saved from execution by a brilliant lawyers who argued before the judge who heard the case that it was not fair to hand a boy because he had taken seriously the writings of Nietzsche and other philosophers taught to him at University. Only one of then was to survive prison, being released after 33 years, emigrating, marrying and working after having taught himself to speak 27 languages nearly one a year during the prison experience. The other died in prison killed by another prisoner. The true life story has been covered several times in film, with Compulsion the most well known and in literature.
